Cloud Computing Survey Brief Reader Viewpoints and Trends on Cloud Computing and its Applications 1
Overview Eucalyptus Systems is one of the pioneers in on-premise private cloud computing and we sought to discover what visitors to our website were thinking about cloud computing and its potential. Our goal was to survey website visitors and give them the opportunity to share their insights with the Eucalyptus community. Survey Background We posted an online questionnaire that was administered by Zoomerang and visitors kind enough to complete the questionnaire were eligible to win one of 3 ipod Nanos. Congratulations to Bjorn G., Don D. and Bryan L. for winning the ipods. This Survey Brief summarizes the survey results and the aggregated views of the 385 respondents, and it provides a snapshot of informed opinions on issues affecting the cloud computing community. Survey Participants The results reflect the views of a broad spectrum of the cloud computing community. Nearly 17% of respondents were architects, and 13% of participants were either presidents, C-level executives or vice presidents. Twelve percent were managers and 9% held director-level positions. The majority of respondents were from the United States, but there was also strong participation from Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Participant Viewpoints What percentage of your IT infrastructure environment is virtualized? The overwhelming majority of respondents said that at least some of their IT infrastructure is virtualized. Only 11% said that none of their infrastructure is virtualized, while 29% said that greater than 50% of their IT infrastructure environment is virtualized. What hypervisors, if any, are you currently running in your IT infrastructure environment? VMware was the clear winner in this category, followed by Xen and KVM tied for a distant second. Respondents are clearly running multiple hypervisors and VMware remains the powerhouse. 2
Do you currently use any public cloud services? Select all that apply. Nearly half 47% are not yet currently using a public cloud service. Of those that are using a public cloud service, the vast majority 36% are using Amazon AWS. The following are the percentage of users of the other public cloud services included in the survey: Google App Engine 17% Rackspace Cloud 11% Windows Azure 11% VMware vcloud Express 7% GoGrid Cloud 3% Terremark Enterprise Cloud 1% Flexiant Flexiscale 0% At what stage is your organization in the process of implementing an on-premise private cloud? Only 20% of respondents are not in the process of implementing an on-premise private cloud and only 11% are actually running applications in the cloud, which means that 68% are researching cloud computing, implementing a pilot project or have a pilot project under development or in a testing phase. What are your plans, if any, for when you would implement an on-premise private cloud or hybrid cloud? Organizations are fast-tracking cloud computing deployments. Among those surveyed, nearly 60% plan implementations within the next 12 months. 3
What cloud management tools, if any, do you use or subscribe to? Select all that apply. There was no clear winner in this category. Over half of the respondents do not use any cloud management tools, and except for RightScale and HP, all the tools listed elicited single-digit response rates. None 55% RightScale 19% HP 14% Other, please specify: 11% CA 9% BMC 8% CloudKick 8% enstratus 5% Joyent 2% Which function owns the decision-making process for implementing an on-premise private cloud or hybrid cloud? Not surprisingly, executive management was named as the function that owns the decision-making process for implementing on-premise cloud solutions, but architecture, infrastructure and applications professionals were not far behind. Technical professionals are playing a critical role in implementing cloud computing solutions. 4
Summary We hope you found these survey results a useful reference point as you analyze your own cloud computing needs and requirements. The vast majority of respondents said that at least some of their IT infrastructure is already virtualized, and of those that are using a public cloud service 36% are using Amazon AWS. 68% are researching cloud computing, implementing a pilot project or have a pilot project under development or in a testing phase, and nearly 60% plan implementations within the next 12 months. Technology experts are increasingly driving cloud computing decisions, and Eucalyptus will continue to publish research and analysis to share insights with the Eucalyptus community to support the ongoing advancement of cloud computing.
