The System for Traffic Demand Analysis (STRADA) packages a number of programs for transport demand forecast that are operated on the Windows. Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) initiated the STRADA program development more than ten years ago to provide a common tool of transport planning, and to build up common database thereof, for its technical assistance program in the transport sector for developing countries. The efforts began in 1993 under the leadership of the then Prof. Hideo Nakamura at Tokyo University with participation of some experts in the relevant fields, officials from the Ministry of National Land and Transport (the then Ministries of Construction and Transport) and private-sector consultants. Since 1997, the STRADA program package has been available for the interested general public as well as being used widely in the JICA-financed overseas projects. Continual upgrading efforts since now provide you with Version 3 of enhanced capability, with newly added features and programs.
Aiming Professional Quality with Multi-lingual Access and Better Visuals Transport planning proceeds in a series of stages, beginning from the analysis of present situations to model building for demand forecast, identification of development projects, demand forecast and project evaluation. The STRADA is developed as a tool to go through these stages with relative ease. It consists of 17 programs and you can choose which programs to use in any combination you like. Version 3 has added the disaggregate model for demand forecast besides the orthodox four-stage demand forecast and assignment. Multi-lingual Operation The STRADA Ver.3 automatically sets up one of the four languages (English, Japanese, French and Spanish) according to the OS locale setup. In addition, the User Manual is now available in the four languages. Enhanced Ease of Editing by Commercial Applications In addition to the standard STRADA record formats, Version 3 supports the CSV format for a greater number of file types than the prior versions. Accordingly, many data files can now be edited by some commercial spreadsheet application or GIS application. The results of forecast and assignment can be output in the CSV format or in the metafile to ensure easier convertibility with commercial software applications. The four-stage forecast is to analyze an aggregated personal activity data by zone. However, the Disaggregate Model analyzes each person's choice directly. The Disaggregate Model is mainly used for modal split model. Model Building The Disaggregate Model performs model building and aggregation thereof either by the multinomial logit (MNL) or the two-level nested logit (NL) model structure. If you choose the NL type model building, you can freely define a tree structure. In order to obtain the maximum likelihood for the undetermined parameters, the Quasi-Newton Method based on the BFCS theorem is applied. The parameter can be applied a statistical test. The Disaggregate Model can do the model building on trip generation/attraction and trip distribution as well, but it performs aggregation only on its modal split models. Improved Convertibility of GIS data Version 3 has substantially upgraded the ease of conversion between the GIS and the STRADA data format. Increased Availability of Models for Demand Forecast In addition to those programs used for the orthodox four-stage demand forecast, Version 3 now lines up the disaggregate model, the combined modal split and assignment model, the time of day user equilibrium assignment program and the stochastic user equilibrium assignment program. Furthermore, the OD Calibrator is added to build an OD matrix based on the observation of selected link flows. Increased Models for Evaluation Version 3 now contains the Evaluator that estimates time cost, running cost, loss by accidents and various environmental costs for the benefit and cost evaluation of transport projects. It also offers the Intersection Analyzer. Seventeen STRADA Program Modules Disaggregate Model Building Demand Forecast (Aggregation) The Disaggregate Model performs aggregation only on its modal split models. Sampling You can write data in the CSV format, one row for each person, with its various attribute descriptions such as decision, possibility of choice, personal characteristics. You can easily do this by one of the commercial spreadsheet applications. You can check the choice distribution of the sample, exclude some sample from model building or from aggregation, and also edit data. Sample Plotting
OD matrix is made based on the results of a person's trip survey or OD traffic survey. However, these investigations cost great time and expense. If you have an existing OD matrix, you can adjust it to be consistent with the results of a traffic count survey by the OD Calibrator. When User Equilibrium Assignment is carried out based on the existing OD matrix, this program rectifies OD matrix so that observation traffic may be obtained. As the method of adjustment, the Route Mean square Error Minimizing Model and the Entropy Maximizing Model are applicable. The OD Calibrator handles only one mode. But it can apply also to the conventional screen compensation and distortion of OD matrix can be removed. OD Matrix Building The most common and orthodox procedure of traffic demand forecast consists of four steps: namely, generating and concentration, distribution, split, and assignment. The Trip Matrix Builder can perform the model construction of three steps and prediction except assignment. An OD matrix describes person trips by origin and destination, normally in the square matrix form with rows showing origin zones and columns destination zones. Moreover, there are zonal indices which gathered population and industrial activity related data according to the zone and OD details. The Matrix Manipulator can perform edit and display of these matrix data. Data Edit Functions Process of the unique data structure on traffic demand forecast, and adjustment calculation like the Fratar method can be easily performed. The index by a zone can calculate the data which became a matrix format. (OD matrix, zonal indices, generated/attracted traffic, OD details, etc.) According to division/integrated parameter of a zone, division and integration of OD matrix, zonal indices, GA traffic, or OD details data can be done. On the occasion of zone division of OD matrix, calculation which specified the rate of traffic secretly can be performed. Zone Division Parameter View Edit Functions Zone coordinates file and OD matrix file are read, and it can display, being able to use arbitrary OD traffic as the desired line diagram. Zone coordinates file and the attributes value classified by zone are read, and on a zone figure, it can graph-display. By a figure ornamentation function, you can change a setup. The line figure of the displayed graph and the desired line diagram by the metafile can be outputted. Moreover, a direct image can be taken in a report. Trip Matrix Builder model is combined with the Trip Generator/Attraction Model, Trip Distribution Model, and the Modal Share model. These build a forecasting model for the observation traffic expressed in OD matrix by regression analysis. Zonal attributes data and interzonal Impedances data are explaining variables. The function type with which the function which can be used by a model is used standard is prepared. Model building displays scatter chart on screen. It can carry out easily, judging the conformity of a model visually. Moreover, forecast can also be easily carried out only by setting up the explaining variable used by a model. Easy GIS Convertibility for High-Quality Presentation Geographic Information System can perform management and processing of data with the information about a position. This is displayed visually, is technology which enables advanced analysis and quick judgment, and is used in various fields. In transport planning, if data is created using the unified coordinates, improved quality of a presentation and a report will be made. The GIS Converter performs the file conversion between the data prepared by two GIS commercial applications, viz., ArcView and MapInfo, and the data used by the STRADA program modules. A data file convertible by the GIS Converter GIS Network Data GIS STRADA Network Transit Line Node Coordinates Zone Border Assignment Parameters STRADA GIS Network Assignment Results Zone Border Zonal Attributes Desired Line GIS Tools Conversion of GIS Line Data Node Extraction from Network Node Coordinate Transformation STRADA Network Data Network data expresses road network typically on data. It is consisted of the nodes equivalent to crossing and the links equivalent to road connects between nodes, and is necessary for you to assign the data. By the Network Editor, you can build and edit even a large-scale road network. Target capacity on the data size is 50,000 links, 40,000 nodes, and 10 modes of OD. It supports not only the standard STRADA format, but also CSV file format. The function of the continuous operation of package correction convenient for correction of link information, combination of two networks and correction, deletion, and an addition can perform editing work easily. Moreover, since network editor is uniting with assignment parameter editor, data required for assignment can be created simultaneously. Modify Multi Link Large - scale Network
Public traffic line data is required for transit assignment. The Transit Line Editor builds/edits the public transportation. Since the partial function of the Network Editor and the assignment parameter editor are unified, required data can be created and corrected simultaneously. The line which passes a specific link and a specific node is extracted, and there is a function which carries out a data check visually by displaying line data information on a screen. Assignment Parameter Line Data Various Assignment programs Assignment means assigning the assignment traffic according to means of transportation according to each course on a traffic network. Generally, the case where OD traffic of a car is distributed to a road network corresponds. Programs can also assignment according to the route of a railroad or a bus. STRADA provides seven assignment models. Assignment Calculation Method Incremental Assignment With the Incremental Assignment program, you can choose from the alternatives of assignment, such as the All-or-nothing method, the diversion-rate, and the variations of the Incremental Assignment with capacity restraint. User Equilibrium Assignment The User Equilibrium Assignment Program uses Wardrop's equal travel time principle for traffic assignment. Stochastic User Equilibrium Assignment The Stochastic User Equilibrium Assignment is distribution in consideration of a user's cognitive error included in a road user's channel selection. The Program is the logit-type model for multi-modal link flow assignment. It offers three alternative algorithms: the successive average and the partial linear approximation methods by Dial loading, and the simplicial decomposition method. Stochastic User Equilibrium Assignment Time of Day User Equilibrium Assignment The presence of residual traffic that is left over to the next time duration is handled by the OD traffic adjustment for the next time duration. Combined Modal Split and Assignment Model The Combined Modal Split and Assignment Model simultaneously perform the modal split and the assignment. It uses the time required and the charge which change with the changes in the user of automobile traffic and public traffic. Moreover, zonal attributes by origin and destination is also used. The mathematical problem of optimizations takes the following arc-chain expression. Transit Assignment The Transit Assignment is the assignment which estimates the user of public traffic (bus, train, etc.). LP Assignment The LP Assignment is a program which distributes a physical distribution using Linear Programming. It is an assignment model in consideration of the transportation cost by the use course on a traffic network. Separated by direction link traffic volumes, congestion, velocity, OD details, directional analysis and route information can be taken out from assignment result and can be displayed. Moreover, You can do continuation execution of distribution calculation of two or more cases. The CSV file format output of assignment results is possible. Link Cost Function The program provides three options for expressing the relationship between traffic volume and travel time, and you can try to very specifications on the road conditions. QV formula BPR function Davidson function Notes: Please use a BPR type in Equilibrium Assignment.
Enhanced Capability by Intersection Analysis and Project Evaluation The Highway Reporter retrieves the link information from the assignment results and converts them into visual presentation. The Highway Reporter works with the results of assignment programs in the STRADA package, namely, incremental, equilibrium, LP and transit. Showing Link Results The Highway Reporter shows link assignment results in various graphic forms. The information outputted to the distribution result file can be chosen and displayed. You can specify the display direction of traffic (Both or Separate). Moreover, you can set up the display color of a link. The metafile output of a display screen is possible. Showing Directional Flows at Intersection The detailed information of link Showing Route Information Showing Transit Assignment Results The Highway Reporter displays the flows of passengers or vehicular traffic in the line network. You can draw the aggregated flow per link of all lines for passenger or vehicular traffic, or the flow per link of a specific line for passenger traffic. Showing Link Assignment Results separated by direction Displaying Some Assignment Results The Highway Reporter can creation of the traffic style figure of the crossing according direction and display the route information. The Highway Reporter can display the traffic volume per direction of flow at a user-selected node (intersection). You can set up display conditions. Moreover, the traffic of an object crossing can be checked by tabular form. It can output to the file of CSV file format. The Highway Reporter can display the route information for zone pairs and for the user-specified links. You can set up display conditions and candidates freely. When you have opened a route information file with user specification of links, the Highway Reporter can output an OD matrix between the link pairs. Showing Boarding and Alighting Passengers
An intersection tends to generate traffic congestion, in order that two or more traffic styles may concentrate. Therefore, the danger of an accident is high. Intersection plan, intersection design, and intersection employment are very important. The Program cannot deal with intersections with five or more approaches or with irregular geometric shapes. Input Data The Intersection Analyzer calculates the saturation rate and the queue length at an intersection when you set up the following conditions. The Program draws the graphic diagram from the results of analysis and can save the results in the formats readable by Excel. Traffic data: OD matrix file or Directional analysis file. Road structure data: Number of lanes, Lane width, etc. Traffic condition data: Signal phases, Direction regulation, etc. Costing Unit and Adjustments The Intersection Analyzer applies the default parameters and adjustment factors based on the standard practices in Japan. It applies the default units and factors to the analysis when you complete the necessary specifications as already explained. You can tailor the defaults to suit the transport conditions of your study area and save them in a new parameter file. Displaying Traffic Flow Diagram Traffic flows can be drawn, when traffic data is set up. You can set up display conditions.when you click the display option, the Intersection Analyzer shows figures close to intersecting arcs and lines. If you do not like the automatic positioning of these figures, you can move them by the standard point-drag-drop method. You can save the intersection diagram into a metafile. Displaying Flow Diagram Maintenance of a transportation facility brings big influence to social economy activity of an area. Therefore, in transport demand forecasting, it is necessary to perform evaluation from various viewpoints. The Evaluator calculates evaluation indices, such indices as the time cost, running cost, loss by accidents and an environmental loss. Specification of Costing Unit The default file contains the basic units used in Japan. You cannot alter the formulas themselves. However, the formulas are linear to the traffic volume and thus applicable to countries other than Japan by adjusting the basic units. The set-up basic unit can be saved. Calculation of Intersection Saturation Calculation of Evaluation Indices The Evaluator reads an assignment results file and calculates, by using the user-specified basic units. The calculation formula used in Japan is used. The list of the calculated evaluation indices can be saved at the file of CSV format. Specifying Basic Units and Adjustments Calculation of Evaluation Indices
