NURSING ENTRANCE EXAM (TEAS) DATES Monday, November 24, 2014 Monday, December 15, 2014 Monday, January 12, 2015 Monday, Febraru 9, 2015 Monday, March 9, 2015 Monday, March 30, 2015 Monday, April 27, 2015 LENGTH OF PROGRAM TEN (10) MONTHS/ 40 SEQUENTIAL WEEKS Divided into 4, 10 week terms August-June PROGRAM HOURS The Monty Tech Practical Nursing Program provides a minimum of 1230 instructional clock hours during its 40-week sequential academic year. Monday through Thursday (evenings) 3:30-9:50 p.m. and every other weekend, Saturday/Sunday (days) 7:30-3:30 or 9am - 3:30 p.m. Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School is committed to providing students with a quality education. Graduates will receive a Practical Nursing Certificate and will be prepared to apply and take the National Council Licensing Examination for Practical Nursing (NCLEX_PN). AFFILIATING HEALTHCARE FACILITIES Clinical Practice is a strong component of this program. Practice is planned in acute care, subacute care, home care and long term care facilities. Students must provide their own transportation to clinical practice agencies.

INTRODUCTION TO THE PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM MISSION STATEMENT The Practical Nursing Program is designed to prepare graduates to practice safely, ethically and in a caring manner for clients who are experiencing common variations in health status in diverse health care settings. This mission is consistent with the philosophy and goals of the Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School that: Identifies a strong relationship between academic and vocational preparation. Stresses the importance of developing thinking skills needed to function safely, effectively, and productively in an ever changing technical and diverse society. Supports the maintenance of a positive and caring learning and practice environment. Practical Nursing Philosophy, Regulation, Scope of Practical Nursing Practice and Program Outcomes. The Scope of Practice for the practical nurse graduating from our program is defined by the laws of Massachusetts as is expressed in the Massachusetts Nurse Practice Act and the Rules and Regulations of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing. Guided by Dr. Jean Watson s Theory of Interpersonal Caring, the program outcomes in the curriculum of the Practical Nursing Program at Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School specifically addresses the following components of practical nursing care: Integrates accountability for the delivery of standard based nursing care consistent with the scope of practice in the state in which they are licensed in. Plans, revises and executes a culture of safety. As part of the interdisciplinary team, interacts effectively with patients, families and team members utilizing therapeutic communication while demonstrating caring and effective interpersonal skills. Provides patient care using components of the nursing process appropriate to the individual/family across the life span. Collaborates with the RN and/or other members of the interdisciplinary team to construct the plan of care based on the nursing process. Provides relative and sensitive healthcare information and teaching utilizing evidence based practice to individuals/families under the direction of the interdisciplinary team. Implements as part interdisciplinary team, a plan of reduction of risk for patients/family across the life span. Using the nursing process, formulates priority based nursing care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team assisting the patient/family with physiologic adaption across the life span. Demonstrates competency in basic care, comfort, pharmacological, nursing interventions and infection control for the patient/family and the interdisciplinary team.

EXEMPTION FOR COMPLETED COURSEWORK If the student has completed coursework previously in this program or from other academic institutions comparable to that required in the Practical Nursing program, the student may request an exemption from completed coursework. The course work must be completed within five (5) years of request for exemption. Requests can be honored for science and psychology content and/or nursing content. No adjustments in tuition will be made as a result of exemption. The exemption process requires that the student submit a written request (available from the Practical Nursing office) for the exemption to the Director of the Practical Nursing program. This request must be presented at least fifteen (15) days prior to the time that the content is scheduled to be presented in the program and accompanied by: a) An official sealed transcript of work completed. A grade of C+ or better must have been attained in the course. b) A course outline or description detailing the content of the coursework. c) The number of credit hours for the course or content previously completed. Hours must meet or exceed those required by the Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School Practical Nursing program. The Director of the Practical Nursing Program will conduct a review of the requested program content exemption and a decision will be returned in advance of the course content presentation. The decision will be one of the following: a) Exemption not granted. b) Exemption granted, no testing required. c) Exemption granted with testing required (must attain a grade of 77% or better). d) Exemption granted: Recommendation to audit class content

ADMISSION TO THE PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM Enrollment to the Practical Nursing Program is competitive and 40-50 students fill a class. A letter of acceptance or non acceptance will be sent to those who completed the admission process for the program. ORIENTATION An orientation will be held for all accepted students in June. At this time, information about book ordering will be provided, uniform fitting will take place, and pictures will be taken for identification badges. A review of the curriculum sequence will be discussed and the projected calendar for the school year will be distributed. Attendance at this meeting is mandatory.
