Hardware Announcement ZG09-0059, dated June 16, 2009 Enhanced IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager offers an easy to use Web-based interface to easily configure, deploy, and manage BladeCenter products Table of contents 1 At a glance 3 Product number 1 Overview 4 Technical information 2 Key prerequisites 5 Terms and conditions 2 Planned availability date 6 Prices 2 Description 6 Announcement countries 3 Product positioning At a glance IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager allows you to reassign the Ethernet MAC addresses and Fibre Channel WWN addresses used by the I/O ports. This version offers a new Web-based user interface that makes setup, deployment, and management simple. Since it is based on Director 6.1, it offers a common look across all System x products. Overview IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager makes IO Virtualization and Blade failover management easy and efficient. The BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager is designed to help administrators manage change and growth by making it easy to configure I/ O and network interconnects for up to 100 BladeCenter chassis - up to 1,400 blade servers. Clients can order the basic version of this software and then choose to upgrade to one of the two advanced version (Standalone or Director plug-in). The basic version offers easy Blade Server deployment and manual rip-n-replace in case of failure. The advanced upgrade allows the flexibility to setup Stand-by Blade pools and event action plans so that in case of failure no manual intervention is required and the LAN and SAN environment of the customer is unchanged to help reduce downtime. While competitive tools typically support a small number of proprietary blades and switches, BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager is more open, allowing you to manage many IBM BladeCenter Ethernet and Fibre Channel switches: Cisco, Nortel, Brocade, and QLogic. The two new part numbers being announced as part of this Announcement offer several enhancements over the current advanced versions of the software. Since Open Fabric Manager 3.0 is not backward compatible with the current version, we are announcing two new part numbers that will replace the existing part numbers. The key enhancements are: Support for Ethernet and Fibre Channel on the next generation high performance HS22 Blade. IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 1

New enhanced step by step Web-based User Interface for easy setup and deployment. Easy deployment feature that allows clients to specify network parameters for future chassis. When a new chassis is added, Open Fabric Manager auto-discovers the chassis and pushes the network parameters automatically so the chassis is up and running in minimal time. Key prerequisites IBM BladeCenter Planned availability date June 26, 2009 Description IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager allows the administrator to reassign the Ethernet MAC addresses and Fibre Channel WWN addresses used by the I/O ports on server blades in IBM BladeCenter. This is accomplished via a combination of firmware installed in the BladeCenter Advanced Management Module, BIOS software installed in the server blades, and firmware in the I/O expansions cards. Instead of being restricted to use only the addresses that are assigned at the time the I/O devices are manufactured, the administrator can control which addresses are used by each of the I/O ports on the blades. In addition, other I/O-related address and control parameters, such as boot device addresses and Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) tags, can be assigned to individual blades under control of IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager. The address and parameter assignments allow blades to be easily changed to simplify typical server, network, and storage administration tasks associated with dynamic provisioning, resource reconfiguration, and blade replacement or failover. IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager enables network and storage resources to be preprovisioned and configured before the server blades arrive on site for initial installation and deployment. Typically, the MAC and WWN addresses that will be used by the server hardware are not known until the hardware arrives onsite and these addresses are manually recorded from the labels on the hardware. This manual effort is subject to human error. Using IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager, the administrator can establish the addresses that each blade will use from a predefined pool of addresses before the hardware arrives and then implement these new address assignments when the hardware arrives. This helps improve time to production for the server blades so that the LAN and SAN resources can be assigned to preassigned addresses that the blades will use before the server blades actually arrive on site. Optionally, if the blades are being booted from external Fibre Channel SAN storage, IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager will allow one or two potential boot targets to be specified. In order to enable easier tracking of current offerings, we are announcing replacement part numbers. This does not impact our customers in any way. The following offerings are being re-announced with new nomenclature based on the mapping below. IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 2
