BURS notice: Non-acceptance of cheques BURS issued a notice that it will no longer accept cheques with effect from 15 April 2015, except bank certified/guaranteed cheques. Tax payments, other than by cash or bank certified/guaranteed cheques will have to be made through electronic transfers into the BURS account at the Bank of Botswana. For each online tax payment, you are required to create an Online Reference Number (ORN). Payments that are less than P500 can only be settled by cash. The ORN has 19 characters, made up of the TIN (taxpayer identification number), tax code and tax period (the tax period is two digits representing the tax year and two other digits relating to the period of payment). Please note that there should NOT be any space, comma or full-stop on the ORN, as that will create an additional character. Also note that the ORN changes depending on the tax-head (type of tax), tax year and month. You are advised to exercise due care in this regard to avoid misallocation of payments. To access a copy of the BURS notice, Bank of Botswana banking details and guidelines on how to construct the ORNs, please click on the link.
