Italian Red Wine Abbruzzo In a nation of myriad appellations, the Abruzzi offers wine drinkers rare and refreshing simplicity. There are only two DOCs and precious few unclassified wines of note in a region that is two-thirds mountains and one-third hills with highly favourable natural conditions for grapevines. 2007, Montepulciano Valle Reale 58 Campania The ancient Romans considered Campania Felix to be the "non plus ultra" of wine regions. They favoured the vineyards along the coast north of Naples where Falernum, the most treasured wine of the empire, was grown. They also lauded the wines of Vesuvius and the hills of Avellino. The Greeks, too, recognised the privileged nature of the place, introducing vines which still stand out today in Aglianico and Greco. 2006, Taurasi DOCG, Antiche Terre 75 Puglia During the period of the Roman Empire, the production and the commerce of Apulian wine were particularly lively and the wines of Puglia were appreciated in Rome. With the construction of the port of Brindisi, in the 244 a.c., the commerce of Apulian wines had a flourishing period and Puglia, during the Roman period, was nicknamed the "wine cellar of Italy" for the great quantities of wine produced. 2009, Primitivo Gold Label, Ugo Zanier 59
Italian Red Wine Toscana This is the home of not only six of the country's DOCG wines, but also the birthplace of the IGT Super Tuscans. The hilly countryside, with altitudes of up to 500 metres, provides some of Italy's finest wines. These hills offer aspects that allow the grapes to express the best varietal characteristics. From Brunello and Vino Nobile to Chianti itself, Sangiovese has its true home in Tuscany. Since the late 60s, we have seen the introduction of international grape varieties, along with the new wine making tecniques. italian have been at the for front of pioneering new styles of wine, such as the Super Tuscan. Italian Red Wine Chianti In addition to splendid landscapes, Chianti's popularity is also directly tied to its fine red wines produced in the region and known generally as Chianti wine. The Chianti region, extending roughly over the two main city provinces of Florence and Siena, is characterized by a combination of almost perfect weather and soil that produces a precious wine considered one of the best wines around the world. The tradition of cultivating vines in Chianti goes back a long time in history, back to the Etruscans that inhabited the area before the Roman empire. 2007, Camp Albracco Rosso Toscano, Tenuta Bonomonte Formichi 53 2009, Cingalino Rosso Toscano 44 Chianti 2006, Rufina, Fattoria di Grignano 58 2008, Rufina Cedro, Fattoria Lavacchio 59 2010, Castellare Di Castellina 53 Chianti Classico 2006, Riserva, Tenuta Bonomonte 65 2008, Casalbosco Porpora Riserva 60 2008, Berardenga, Fattoria di Felsina 78

Italian Red Wine cont... Piemonte wine is the range of Italian wines made in the province of Piedmont in the northwestern corner of Italy. The most well known wines from the region include Barolo and Barbaresco. They are made from the Nebbiolo grape. These wines are ideal for ageing and a well-aged Barolo for instance may leave a feeling of drinking velvet because the tannins are polished and integrated more and more into the wine. As the wine matures the colour becomes more brownish and rust-red. Other popular grapes used for red wine production are Barbera and Dolcetto. Wine made on the Barbera grape is often fruity and delicate with less tannin than wine made from the Nebbiolo grape. Dolcetto on the other side, is not as the name indicates sweet (dolce is Italian for sweet). The grape gives fresh and dry red wines with some tannin. The wines made on the Dolcetto grape should be consumed young or lighter fares 2008, Sito Moresco, Gaja, Langhe 115 Barbera 2005, d Alba, Basarin Mainerdo, Superiore 70 2009, d Alba Rocca~Giovino, Gigi Rosso 52 2009, d Asti Soliter, Pescaja 59 2007, Nebbiolo d Alba Rocca~Giovino, Gigi Rosso 62 2008, Langhe Nebbiolo, Cascina Adelaide 69 2008, Pio Cesare, Fides 105 Barbaresco 2006, Giribaldi 79 2006, Pio Cesare, 149

Italian Red Wine cont. Veneto is a wine region in north-eastern Italy, one of a group of three highly productive Italian regions known collectively as the Venezie (after the ancient Venetian Republic) and the biggest DOC producer of the three. Although the Venezie collectively produce more red wine than white, the Veneto region produces more whites under DOC and is home to the famous Soave wines. The region is protected from the harsh northern European climate by the Alps, the foothills of which form the Veneto's northern extremes. These cooler climes are well-suited to white varieties like Garganega (the main grape for Soave wines) while the warmer Adriatic coastal plains and river valleys are where the renowned Valpolicella, Amarone and Bardolino DOC reds are produced. Veneto's growers are among the most modernised in Italy. While most of the 'classic' wines from this area are based on native grape varieties like Prosecco and Verduzzo, high demand for Veneto wines in the European and North American markets has galvanized the region's producers into experimentation with Cabernets, Chardonnay and Pinot varieties, among others. Italian Red Wine cont... Amarone della Valpolicella, usually known as Amarone, is a typically rich Italian dry red wine made from the partially dried grapes of the Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara varieties. The wine was awarded Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) status in December 1990. On 4 December 2009, Amarone and Recioto della Valpolicella were promoted to the status of Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG). The final result is a very ripe, raisiny, full-bodied wine with very little acid. Alcohol content easily surpasses 15% (the legal minimum is 14%) and the resulting wine is rarely released until five years after the vintage, even though this is not a legal requirement. Amarone to begin with just the colour is amazing, a deep intense, ruby red. The aromas are just as strong and powerful, rich and fruity, along with aromas of red berries and spices. Drinking this wine is the pinnacle of the whole experience. It is intense, rich, luscious, and fruity. It is also very smooth and velvety while at the same time quite thick, and unbelievably complex!! It is the Chateau d'yquem of Italy, absent the grandeur. It is the coveted gem of the Boot, but does not bear the prestigious name Sassicaia. It is a legendary winery, without an estate. Its bottles are identified by hand scripted labels that provide a glimpse into the heart and soul of the world s truest artisanal winemaker. It is Quintarelli! Known as "the Master of the Veneto," Giuseppe Quintarelli makes some of the world s most sought-after wines. From aperitifs to digestifs, his limited production Amarones, Reciotos, and Valpolicellas are the benchmark for excellence (along with Dal Forno, Veneto's other legendary producer). Their greatness stems from the inherent quality of the terroir and natural talent of this master, whose concept of vintage approval and strict grape selection rival the great Chateau of Sauternes. Giuseppe puts his wines on the market when he deems them ready, often keeping them in the cellar for decades until the right moment arrives. Primofiore 2006 130 Valpolicella 2001 200 Rosso di Bepi 2002 380 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 1998 850 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2000 800 Alzero 1998 875 Quintarelli's Alzero is one of Italy's most unique, compelling wines, particularly in top vintages, in which it can be utterly mind-blowing. Alzero is mostly Cabernet Franc, with a dollop of Merlot, made Amarone-style. The 1998 reveals compelling layers of ripe dark fruit, sweet herbs, chocolate and spices that gradually unfurl in the glass. It isn't easy to keep up with Giuseppe Quintarelli, as this legendary producer releases his wines when he feels they are ready, not a moment sooner. As is often the case, these are some of the most mind-blowing wines being made anywhere, but sadly, prices are equally dizzying. Still, for readers who can afford them, these are reference-point wines.
