LLC is revising existing programs and the newly formed LLC Curriculum Committee is seeking way to harness the research strengths of colleagues across the disciplines. We are proposing new minor programs in European Literature and Culture and in Literature and Culture in Music. LLC s language teaching team is at the cutting edge of developments in language teaching, language instructor training, and collaborative language learning. Following are some examples of teaching innovations and how instructors in LLC are integrating instructional technology into language, literature, culture, and film courses: a. LMS: Mycourses, Moodle: instructors are making increased use of online forum tools on mycourses and Moodle to give students more room for self-expression and participation beyond the classroom. For instance, Moodle allows for more self-guided learning processes on part of the students such as having students develop their own glossaries surrounding various topics,
creating their own databases for certain themes to share with the whole class or using wikis to create collaborative documents or whole projects. These tools help to increase student interaction and encourage students to become collaborative and self-directed learners instead of mere passive recipients in class. b. Blogs: The implementation of blogs allows students to slip into the role of authors to experiment with expressing their ideas. c. Web site creation with Weebly: For instance, in a cultural studies course on Berlin since 1989, students designed in groups as a final project a website on a topic of their own choosing in the context of Berlin since reunification. By creating their own websites, students could unleash their full creative potential and explore their interests on a deep level beyond discussing readings and various topics in class. d. Learningapps.org: This website allows for the creation of various online learning tools such as time lines, maps searches, matching etc. which makes the learning process more concrete. e. Korsakow Films: This experiment deals with non-linear story telling to challenge students saturation with linear narratives provided by mainstream media and to question the deliverance of seemingly factual knowledge. With the help of the open source software Korsakow, students can develop their own films. This project also serves as an introduction to digital, dynamic storytelling in the target language. f. Digital humanities: The course offered in digital humanities challenge students to develop research tools. Much of the teaching is based on tutorials as students undertake self-directed projects. Involvement in the community LLC researchers are involved in numerous collaborative research projects: Michael Cowan is principle investigator of the CFI Moving Image Research Laboratory (MIRL) and coinvestigator of A FQRSC Soutien aux equips de recherché ARTHEMIS with Concordia. He organized, amongst other events, a colloquium Moving Images Mobile Screens at the MIRL in September 2012. José Jouve-Martín is part of SSHRC Collaborative Research Initiative The Hispanic Baroque ; he co-organized Cities and the Baroque, an International Symposium at McGill in April 2012, and in October, he organized a conference at McGill entitled Latin America and Quebec: Past, Present, and Future. Stephanie Posthumus organized a panel discussion at the School of the Environment in September, Silent Spring at 50: Rachel Carson and Cultures of Environmentalism. Andrew Piper is co-founder and co-investigator of Interacting with Print and organized two SSHRC-funded workshop/conferences in which participants engage in collaborative writing projects. Lyudmila Parts was invited to deliver lecturers at Dalhousie University and the Segal Center in Montreal, and Karin Bauer was a discussant in a round table on Civil Disobedience at the Goethe Institute during the time of student unrest last April. Stefan Sinclair organized Public Digital Humanities, Text Mining & Visualization and other workshops and events on digital humanities at McGill last year. Jesús Pérez-Magallón is editor of Revista Canadiense de Estudios Hispanicos and Karin Bauer and Andrew Piper are editors of Seminar: A Journal of Germanic Studies.
