He was aged 40 at the time the information was collected. He later settled in New Zealand, and worked as a fisherman in Otago. He was naturalised in 1899, and died several years later in Oamaru. Goedicke, Theodore Frederic (also known as Fred(e)rick Theodor) 34 Date of birth: 15/8/1861 Date of death: 1956 Biographical notes: Born in Salzwedel, Germany; naturalised in Australia in 1884. He arrived in Tonga in 1887, and for a time was a trader who lived in Fakakakai, Ha apai, on Deutsche Handels- und Plantagen-Gesellschaft premises; he later resided in the Club Hotel in Nuku alofa, where he was regarded as a respected townsman. Legal proceedings against Emil Hutter in September 1898. Appears to have still been resident in Tonga in 1917, as is indicated by his being named as next-of-kin for his son Alexander Charles Goedicke (c. 1897-1966), who embarked with the NZ Engineers Tunnelling Company, 4 th Reinforcements in 1917. At the age of c. 90 he was described as being 5 ft. 2½ in. tall with hazel eyes and white hair. He died in New Zealand. Educated in Tonga and New Zealand. Was a baker and owned a small plantation. Interned 18/12/1941 and sent to New Zealand, arriving in Auckland 30/12/1941. Appealed his internment on 30/12/1941, 29/9/1942 and 10/4/1944. Released from internment on 30/6/1944. Married Ana Ma u Telai at age 37. Their children were Jane Dypiana, Viniana Ma Vava u, Carl Oscar, Felix Lami, Joshua Ingold and Jane Gladiola. He died in Nukualofa, aged 48. 38 Guttenbeil, Hermann Gustav Date of birth: 23/1/1855 Date of death: 1931 Biographical notes: Born in Pyritz, Germany, the eldest son of August and Auguste Gut(t)enbeil, a cooper by trade. Came to Vava u in 1881 and initially worked for the Deutsche Handels- und Plantagen-Gesellschaft; later he became a hotel-keeper and general trader in Neiafu, Vava u. Married Lucy Bartley in Neiafu in 1882. Children: Charles Berthold (b. 1884), Hermann Edward (b. 1886), Mary Eveline (b. 1888), and Louise Martha (b. 1891). After the death of Lucy in 1918, he married Seini Polini in 1920. The two had a son together, Berthold August, who died young. In his later years he set up trading for Messrs Morris Hedstrom. Died in 1931, in his fiftieth year of living in Tonga, at the age of 76.
