Graduate Studies FUNDING Federal Financial Aid Federal financial aid can be used toward the cost of tuition, books or other living expenses so you can focus on attaining your degree. You must be fully admitted into a graduate degree program and enrolled at least on a half-time basis (four graduate credit during the fall and spring semesters; three graduate credit during the summer session) to receive assistance from some of the federal aid programs, including the Perkins Loan, Stafford Loan and work-study employment programs. The Perkins and Stafford loan programs provide low-interest loan assistance that usually does not have to be repaid until after completion of your degree program. The federal work-study program provides assistance through part-time, on-campus or off-campus employment. Work-study positions are available in many administrative and academic areas at UCM, and at several off-campus community service organizations throughout the school year and summer. Graduate Advisor Once you are admitted to a graduate program, a faculty member in your department will be appointed as your graduate advisor. Your graduate adviser will help you plan your program of study and provide advice to you as you progress through graduate school. Graduate Assistantships Many students use graduate assistantships to provide financial support while gaining valuable professional experiences in their field of study. Duties vary depending on the type of assistantship, but include areas such as: teaching, laboratory, research, administration and student engagement. Each department appoints its own graduate assistant. The compensation for a full-time graduate assistant (20 per week) is $3,750 per semester or $7,500 for two semesters. Graduate assistants are also eligible for a scholarship that will be applied to the cost of coursework. A list of available graduate assistantships and procedures for applying can be found at jobs.ucmo.edu. Thanks to my master s in math from UCM, I ve been offered several positions related to mathematics and have gone on to successful Ph.D. studies. Justin Hoffmeier, M.S. in Mathematics 4

Graduate Student Association The Graduate Student Association gives you a forum of your peers for discussion of issues concerning graduate students. The GSA appoints graduate student representatives to a number of university committees and governance groups. All graduate students actively enrolled are automatically members of the GSA. I can proudly say that I received my education from UCM professors who truly have my best interest at heart. JaNomia Smith, M.S. in College Student Personnel Administration Research Funding The Willard North Research Awards are named in honor of Will North, who devoted many years to fostering research activities at UCM. These awards promote and encourage the highest levels of graduate research and scholarly investigation. North was a proponent of sound research design, appropriate statistical techniques, and proper interpretation of results. Proposed projects are usually considered as joint student/faculty research or student thesis development. Proposals may be submitted at any time. In addition, the Graduate Student Research Award brings recognition and reward to the authors of exemplary research in UCM s graduate programs. Faculty members identify and submit outstanding student theses to the competition. Scholarships The Graduate Student Achievement Award, the President s Diversity Scholarship, Graduate Non-Resident Scholarship, Warren C. Lovinger Scholarship, the Reid Hemphill Outstanding Graduate Student Award and many discipline-specific scholarships are available to graduate students. A complete list of scholarships is available at ucmo.edu/graduate. 5
