History: The Department of Political Science was established in late 1963 and began to function on a full fledged basis in July,1964. Prof. T.B. Mukherjee was the founder Head of the department.
Though the infrastructure of the department was built along traditional lines. But since the fifth plan period it embarked upon the fulfilment of its aspiration to grow as a research orientated institution for the benefit of the society at large. Keeping this view in mind, the Survey Research Unit(SRU) was establish in 1966 with the financial assistance of the University. It was provided with a Research Associate and an assistant. HOD of Political Science was the ex-officio Director of the Unit.
In the matter of research development, this department had been lucky enough to headed by Dr. R.C. Prasad, one of the Political Scientists of the first generation exposed to modern empirical research. He received his formal training in large scale empirical research in 1965 under Dr. Pelz, Programme Director of the Survey Research Centre, Michigan. Then, the former head of the department, Dr. B.P. Singh was also basically trained in empirical methodology. During the sixth plan period, two more post of Research Associate were sanctioned by the UGC. The SRU has about a dozen completed research projects at its credit, funded either by the Magadh University or by the UGC or ICSSR.

Department Profile: The department of Political Science has from its very inception developed itself as a centre of advanced teaching and research. It is built in an area of about 3800 sq.ft. It has seven rooms for the purposes of lectures and tutorial. Besides an office room and a seminar library hall there are nine small rooms for teachers.at present there are six teachers working in the department. The department is manned by two office assistants, two peons and a librarian. These staff look after the day to day working of the department properly, maintain the papers, documents and records and assist the teachers in their official duties. The librarian takes care of the seminar library housed in a big hall. As per accession register there are 7251 books and a large no. of Journals (Indian and Foreign) stacked in 36 almirahs. Besides, there are four reading tables, 20 chairs, 1 magazine display rack, 1 catalogue card cabinet etc.
The department has the following equipment :- Computer -1 Projector with Electronic Board, Laptop etc -1 Projector Screen -1 C.C.T.V. Cameras with necessary equipment -1 A.C -5 Air Cooler -1 Water Cooler with Aqua Guard -1 All Teachers have been provided Laptop by the University
Faculty Members: The faculty members do take part in academic activities such as attending and organising Seminars and Conferences. Dr.Md. Ehtesham Khan participated and presented paper in the xx 111 World Congress of IAHR at Toronto, Canada during August 15-21, 2010. Moreover, he has presented papers in more than forty National as well as International Seminars/Conferences and has been invited to deliver lectures as a Guest Speaker or as a Chair in various Conferences during last five years. Dr B.N. Singh attended International Seminar in Chile in 2011, while Dr. J.R. Prasad attended at Thailand in 2012.It is to be noted that the department had organised a UGC Sponsored National Seminar entitled, Socio-Political Dimensions of Women Empowerment during 26-27 April, 2012.

Syllabus: The M.A (Political Science Course consists of four parts spread over four academic semester with a University examination being held at the conclusion of each semester. There shall be four compulsory papers for each of the first three semesters. The fourth semester shall contain four optional papers. From four optional papers, students may select any one the three separate groups, each having four papers.
Thus, a total of sixteen papers shall be taught to the students. The evaluation of papers, carrying 100 marks, shall be done by taking a written examination of 80 marks to be taken in three hours in one sitting at the end of the semester comprising all the topics of the paper by the University, the remaining 20 marks of each paper shall be allotted to sessional work to be evaluated by the Departmental Council concerned in the form of written component(10marks) of the topic from the paper taught and day to day assessment (10 marks) of the candidate pertaining to his her performance at the extra- curricular activities, general behaviour and conduct, performance at Seminars and regularity in attending classes etc. No objective questions shall be asked. Students shall be required to answer any four questions from an option of total eight questions in each paper of three hours duration.
Achievements: Being a developing nation the teaching of Political Science has a very important role in the political socialisation of the young people. Of course, in reality it is the science of democracy, which provides some necessary inputs of support to democratic policy The Magadh University is peculiarly situated in a complete rural setting. Obviously our Department of Political Science involves itself with closer interactions with community around the University to arouse awareness among the people regarding development programmes, scientific temper and proper implementation of Panchayati Raj System. The Dept.has been playing a significant role in the field of higher education by providing quality education through well qualified faculty and infrastructure. The plan is to attract the domestic as well as foreign students to the department. Presently about eight foreign students are pursuing higher studies or doing Ph.D from the Department.
Time Table: The working hours 0f the department- (10:30 am to 5 pm) from Monday to Saturday, representing a workweek of six days. The time may be changed in summer.
Other Details: The Departmental Council used to discuss the teaching learning problem and take the need based action to improve the scenario. The Department has planned to organise National as well as an International Seminars on the relevant topic like Human rights, Minorities under Indian Constitution, Criminalisation in Politics, Extremism, Good Governance, Development and the concept of Make in India, India s Policy on Neighbourhood and so on.
The eminent scholars have been regularly invited to deliver their lectures on relevant issues. Recently Dr. Arshi Khan of the Department of Political Science, AMU, Aligarh (Fulbright Fellow, New York University, USA 2004) was invited to deliver Lecture on Politics of Global War on Terror : Challenge or Opportunity. The collaboration with other Universities, publication of Journal of the department as well as doing some projects are in the process.
