Open Access Fibre for Apartment Buildings Super fast Fibre internet for your residents, at no cost to you. www.octotel.co.za hello@octotel.co.za Summary: Octotel builds Open Access fibreoptic networks in Cape Town. Our network provides affordable high-speed internet connectivity up to 250 times faster than traditional copper lines. Why Octotel? We offer an alternative to Telkom s aging and highly congested ADSL network. We are focused on the Atlantic Seaboard and already have buy in from residents and many body corporates in the area. Services: Our network speeds currently range between 10Mbps and 1Gbps, making high quality internet access and HD video streaming services a reality. Why Fibre? We bring fibre connectivity directly into every home. Fibre networks are an expensive investment, but they are very reliable and have a long lifespan. The fibre we install today will be able to service future demand with speeds up to 10Gbps. We use the same technology as in leading broadband markets like Japan. Fibre is the fastest technology available for transmitting data and raises the value of properties. People are choosing where to live based on where high speed internet services are available. Fibre to the home raises property values by R50,000. - FTTH Council Africa Why Open Access? Octotel has a fully Open Access business model. This means that Octotel will only operate and maintain the fibre infrastructure. We act as a utility and we never directly sell internet services (data and voice). Internet services are provided by ISPs like Web Africa and RSAWEB. This will ensure that residents get the benefits of future price reductions and the best service levels without a lock-in to a single ISP. Open Access is very important for apartment buildings because it offers residents more choice. Should residents become unhappy with their ISP they simply switch providers. They are never forced to deal with a single ISP which makes it easy to resolve problems. Apartment Buildings: Our service is very well suited for apartment buildings. A whole apartment block can quickly be connected once our fibre is installed at street level. Each apartment gets a fibre network termination device and users can select their network speed and internet service from a range of ISPs. Network speeds can be upgraded instantly. Octotel offers buildings: Free fibre optic cabling to each floor. Free high speed and reliable connectivity for remote CCTV and security monitoring. Minimal disruption and aesthetic impact. Free management and ongoing maintenance. - T&C s apply to free services. Billing: Residents buy services from an ISP of their choice, which will offer them internet and voice services bundled with our fibre line service. The ISP will be their single point of contact and they get a single bill. How will the network be built? Octotel trenches along the streets. Each building will get a small wall box mounted in the basement. From there fibre will be installed on floor level and into each apartment by teams of qualified network technicians. How soon will services be available? It takes 4-12 weeks to connect a building. An interim high speed wireless link can be installed in cases where a fibre route build is in progress. End User Services Building Services Expected Monthly Costs for End Users* * Note: Pricing will depend on the choice of ISP. This is indicative pricing only. High end and uncapped packages may be more expensive. Octotel does not provide any ISP services because of its Open Access model. Installation Costs for End Users Once-off Activation Fee: R1500 (Incl. VAT) This cost is billed directly to the tenant. Includes a fibre termination device (CPE). The CPE remains the Octotel s property. Data Services Speed ISP Fee Line Fee Octotel powered 10 Mbps R429 Included ADSL 10Mbps R888 Included Octotel powered 20 Mbps R899 Included Octotel powered 100 Mbps R999 Included Octotel powered 1000 Mbps R1999 Included ISPs bundle our line service with Capped or Uncapped Internet Access services and Voice over IP (VoIP) services. ISPs will provide routers and Wi-Fi devices to end users. The underlying technology we use is asymmetric, 2:1, double the download vs upload speed. A 100Mbps line will have an upload speed of 50Mbps for example. Voice Services Tenants can keep their existing land line numbers. The cost to port a number is in the order of R200, depending on ISP. ISPs will usually supply a VoIP phone with their voice services. Our network provides dedicated bandwidth for VoIP. Cabling and Power Needs Octotel will install fibre optic cabling in the building from basement to floor level at no cost to the building. It should take 3-7 days to cable the basement and floor level aggregation points. It should take around 2 days per floor to reach each apartment. We will use existing risers and cable management systems where possible and we will work with the building manager to find the most suitable design for each building. The Octotel network is based on the GPON standard which is a passive fibre network. This means that we don t need any power for our equipment in the basement or on floor level. If your building needs an AE (Active Ethernet) install, we will need power in the basement and we will provide a UPS device to supply redundant power for our equipment. Free Services and Related Terms Octotel provides the following free services: Fibre optic cabling to each floor: As soon as at least 10 tenants register interest on our website and the building management agrees to let Octotel be the building s only fibre network provider for a period of 5 years. This allows us to recover our costs to provide the cabling for free. Connectivity for remote CCTV monitoring: If 50% of tenants sign up for a fibre line rental service. Note: we will connect the building to our fibre network for free, but the security company s monitoring station will need to be connected to our network at our standard pricing if it is not already connected. Octotel Services Frequently Asked Questions What are my other options for fibre? You could agree to a Single Vendor network for your building. With this model residents have to buy ISP services from a single provider and there is no competition on the ISP level to keep prices market related. Can we keep my home phone number? Yes, your ISP can port your home number to their network. This includes 021 numbers which are currently on the Telkom network. Can we keep the same email address? Yes, if you use an ISP email service and use the same ISP with your new fibre connection, you will not have to change. Neither will you have to change if your email isn't tied to your current ISP e.g. gmail.com. Do you provide intercom services? Yes, we can advise on IP enabled intercom services. Do you provide Wi-Fi for general areas? We can suggest ISP partners who will provide Wi-Fi for reception and common areas. Do you provide CCTV services? We can suggest partners who will install IP CCTV systems and offer remote monitoring. We only provide connectivity between buildings and monitoring stations.
