Scholarship Program In keeping with our policy of providing quality education for young people, Florida PTA goes one step further by assisting qualified students who wish to continue their education beyond high school. These scholarships are funded by net proceeds derived from Honorary Life Memberships, Scholarship Fund meal functions and other contributions. Florida PTA is pleased to offer a total of four (4) scholarships, one each in the following categories: University, Fine Arts, Community College and Vo-Tech, to a student graduating in the 2014-2015 school year. This is a one time (non-renewable) award of $2,000.00 and will be awarded to worthy students who are interested in getting a start in life through higher education. This award is specifically for a student who wishes to pursue their education at a Florida University, Fine Arts School, Community College or Vo-Tech. The minimum eligibility requirements are as follows: Students Must: 1. Be a member of their high school s PTA/PTSA or the Sunshine State PTSA (PTA/PTSA must be in good standing). 2. Graduate from a Florida High School in the 2014-2015 school year. 3. Be a current resident of Florida. 4. Planning to continue their education in the 2015-2016 school year as a full-time undergraduate student in a post-secondary institution, Vocational/Technical Institution, and/or Community/Junior College. 5. Full complete the application (available online after September 1, 2014), submit letters of recommendation, essay and an official copy of their high school transcript, ACT and/ or SAT scores. Additional factors will be taken into consideration selecting a winner (i.e., need, special circumstances, extracurricular activities and honors. Leadership Development In an effort to strengthen PTA work at all levels, the Florida PTA offers opportunities to train and develop qualified leaders. Send as many representatives as possible to the conferences and meetings. County Councils are available to help local PTAs answer questions, solve problems, provide leadership and organize new PTAs in their respective counties. Many county councils offer leadership training and workshops. Leadership Teams are available for County Councils and local PTAs to help with leadership technique, knowledge of PTA issues and problem solving. Leadership/Convention is held annually by Florida PTA. The statewide, three-day session provides leadership training for officers, committee chairs and interested members so they may perform more effectively in their PTA positions. Other benefits include enrichment classes and the opportunity to meet and share with PTAs from all around Florida. In addition, convention activities for the purposes of carrying out Florida PTA business is included. The FPTA Action Platform is determined by the delegate body. Each local PTA and each county council is entitled to voting delegates as explained in the FPTA bylaws, but any member can attend. Legislative Activities are held annually in Tallahassee to familiarize PTA members with the Legislative Process. County Council Presidents/Region Representatives Workshop is a program designated to train new county council presidents/region representatives, acquaint them with the functions of the state office and provide them an opportunity to discuss ways in which to coordinate the work of the FPTA with state officers and committee chairs. www.floridapta.org - 2014/2015, Section 7, Page 6
