2 History The movement toward independent living began in 1962, when Ed Roberts started an independent living program for persons with disabilities on a US college campus.
3 The struggle for Independence is not a medical or functional issue but a Social, Political, and Civil Rights Struggle. Don Galloway, manager of Blind Services, and Ed Roberts, Executive Director of the fledgling Center for Independent Living, in 1974 on Berkley Campus.
4 Ed Roberts Vision He hoped to end stereotypes and allow persons with disabilities to control their own lives. He wanted people with disabilities to direct their own programs and to be able to train other persons with disabilities to direct new programs. It was the start of the power of independent living and dignity.
5 By 1976 Roberts vision spread across America
6 The movement spread to Florida in 1975 with the first Center for Independent Living (CIL) opening in Cocoa Beach. Over the years a total of sixteen more centers have opened in Florida.

8 Core Services Independent Living Skills Training Information and Referral Peer Support Advocacy
9 Core Services Independent Living Skills Training - Instruction and skill building for living independently with a disability. Topics can include cooking, budgeting, transportation, and social skills training.
10 Core Services Information and Referral - Community information and referral assistance to other organizations and agencies to help persons with disabilities.
11 Core Services Peer Support Persons with disabilities helping and supporting other persons with disabilities.
12 Core Services Advocacy - Educating consumers about the rights of persons with disabilities, assisting individuals in learning laws to self-advocate, and working within the system to bring about change.

14 Loan Lockers CIL s offer equipment to those who are in need. The Loan Locker helps consumers live independently and allows freedom.
15 Loan Locker This program allows consumers or businesses to borrow equipment such as wheelchairs, quad-canes, shower benches, or portable ramps to make any event accessible.
