Department Overview Rehabilitation Services include physical therapy (PT), occupational therapy (OT) and speech-language pathology (SLP). Therapists provide services to patients with acquired or congenital disability, injury and/or disease and to maximize function.

Scope of Services Rehabilitation Services works as part of an inter-disciplinary team which may also include other disciplines such as medical staff, nursing staff, social services, care management, nutrition and others as needed to individualize patient care. Physical Therapists(PT), Occupational therapists (OT) and Speech- Language Pathologists (SLP) evaluate and treat a combined average of 3,110 patients per month. Individual Job Titles PTs and PTAs evaluate and treat patients with impairments in balance, functional mobility, strength, range of motion and endurance. OTs and COTAs evaluate and treat patients with impairments in activities of daily living (e.g. bathing, dressing, feeding), functional transfers and fine motor skills. SLPs evaluate and treat patients with speech, language, cognitive, voice, and swallowing impairments. All three disciplines strive to improve the patient s overall function and quality of life.
Interesting Facts about Rehab Therapists from our department treat patients in all units of the hospital, with populations ranging from premature infants to geriatrics. In addition to swallowing evaluations, SLPs also perform extensive, cognitive assessments. OT s focus on Activities of Daily Living, which include items such as bathing, dressing, money management, driving, and sex education.
Interesting Facts about Rehab PT s and OT s can specialize in lymphedema treatment which includes massage, exercise, and referrals to outpatient for individualized wrapping. A goal of the Joint Center is for PT to begin treatment and mobility the day of surgery. SLP s are rolling out a new program utilizing FEES (fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing), which is a bedside assessment. All patients following breast surgery (mastectomies, reconstruction, etc) will be followed by an OT for functional mobility, ADL s, exercise, and lifestyle modifications.
Frequently Asked Questions How long will it take for my patient to see a PT/OT/SLP after an order is put in? All disciplines attempt to address all orders within 24 hours. I want to get my patient out of bed, but they haven t seen a PT or OT yet. What do I do? Nursing staff can initiate mobility before a patient is evaluated with the use of a lift or 2-person transfer. They do not need to wait for PT/OT.
