KEEPING YOU MOVING FORWARD As our commitment to help our customers reduce their lubrication costs and increase their operational profitability we offer solutions such as Cylinder Condition monitoring for low speed engines and Oil Life extension tool for medium speed engines. Cylinder condition monitoring All low speed engine manufacturers are reducing cylinder lubrication feed rates, with the aim of minimising both lubricant and maintenance costs. Although modern electronically controlled cylinder lubrication systems have taken much of the uncertainty out of optimising cylinder oil consumption, in a number of cases sudden severe wear has appeared without any visible prior warning from the automatic control system. Direct user monitoring of oil and cylinder condition is a valuable complement. Shell Marine Products offers the right tools to allow customers to monitor cylinder condition and maintain the balance between cost and reliability, including: On-board Shell ANALEXAlert: measurement and monitoring of iron content in cylinder drain oil. Shell On-board Plus test kit: measurement of TBN and water content. Rapid Lubricants Analysis (RLA): samples are airmailed direct to one of Shell s four laboratories, and detailed analytical reports and recommended corrective actions returned by email. Oil Stress and oil life extension In an engine, the oil is stressed in three different ways: by acid stress, by thermal stress and by asphaltene stress. The overall level of Oil Stress depends on the strength of these individual stresses, the amount of oil available to absorb them and the rate of renewal of the oil. To study the impact of Oil Stress on medium speed engines and understand the future needs for oil formulation, we have tested extensively and benchmarked lubricant performance under extreme conditions at our Marine and Power Innovation Centre. The knowledge gained from this research has underpinned the development of a new range of Shell Argina Oils designed to address the challenges of acid, thermal and asphaltene stress in the engines of today and tomorrow, leading to: More reliable engine operation. Extended component life. Lower running costs. Technology for environmental protection Shell Marine Products is the leading supplier of LSFO bunkers on North East Europe, helping customers to comply with changing sulpher emission legislation. We are in the process of modernising our barge fleet by progressing with a global standard use of double hull barges, which in some cases is over and above local regulations. For the longer term, Shell Marine Products is investing in alternatives to fuel oil, such as GTL technology, to develop fuel with lower environmental impact. Shell is a member of Shipping Emissions Abatement and Trading (SEAaT) a cross-industry group whose mission is to encourage and facilitate the efficient reduction of harmful emissions to air from shipping, for example through abatement and emissions trading alternatives. Shell Marine Products is a member of the Global Leadership and Technology Exchange (GLTE), an international business consortium of oil and shipping companies whose mission is to develop improved energy efficient fuel and hardware solutions. Shell Marine Products offers a range of industry-leading technical products and services, including: Shell Rapid Lubricants Analysis By testing the lubricants in your machinery we can reveal critical information about the health of your equipment, helping you: Detect mechanical problems before they occur. Avoid unexpected breakdowns and expensive down time. Retain the oil charge until it really needs changing. Develop a greater understanding of equipment performance. Reduce monitoring and maintenance costs. We believe Shell RLA is the longestestablished and most thorough lubricants analysis service available in the industry; and, with thousands of customers around the world reliant on the Shell RLA service, we are proud of the depth and breadth of our knowledge and experience. We have four laboratories worldwide and we use highly automated test methods linked directly to a central data processor. This means all Shell RLA results are supplied quickly, efficiently and reliably. In the event of any abnormal results being detected, we send you emergency advice immediately. Shell ANALEXAlert Shell ANALEXAlert is a unique, portable device that provides on board measurement and recording of iron content in oils and greases, helping you identify and replace worn parts before they cause engine and equipment failure. It couldn t be easier. Simply place a sample in a standard Shell RLA bottle in the compact unit, then use the intuitive touch screen to obtain a reading in a matter of seconds. Used regularly, Shell ANALEXAlert will give you complete sets of trend data showing levels of wear in all your critical equipment and machinery, so you can take instant action when the Shell ANALEXAlert results warn you of an imminent breakdown. Shell ANALEXAlert also helps you plan preventative maintenance, reducing equipment downtime and increasing operational profitability. AN INTRODUCTION TO TECHNICAL SERVICES
A CENTURY OF INNOVATION Shell delivered the world s first liquid marine fuel to the Royal Navy in 1902. We opened our first marine technology research Centre at Delft University in 1928 with a 320mm bore 4 stroke test engine to test fuels and lubricants. The first tests of residual fuels in diesel engines were conducted by Shell in 1938. A world first in residual fuels - Shell tanker MS Auricula sailed from UK to Curacao in 1946 on residual fuel. As a result the fuel centrifuge became standard equipment on-board motor ships enabling ships to burn residual fuel. The first ever gas turbine to be fitted to a commercial ship was the Shell Tanker Auris, in 1951. Shell Alexia A, the first ever successful alkaline cylinder oil was launched in 1956. Shell Argina, the world s first alkaline crankcase oil for medium speed trunk piston engines, was launched in 1965. Shell pioneered the development of high density Fuel Oil and was first to enter the marine market with a 500 cst Residual Fuel Oil in 1984. More recently Shell Marine Products has specially developed Shell ALEXIA LS to ensure: excellent cylinder lubrication of modern low speed engines when burning LSFO. Also, Shell is leading the field in understanding the ignition and combustion properties of residual fuels.
