Introduction Surgical Skillz First Assisting Program provides online training to qualified healthcare providers to promote career advancement, high-level skills development, job satisfaction and provide the best care for our patients. Mission Statement The core mission of Surgical Skillz First Assisting is to prepare and train individuals for various roles in the surgical environment. This mission will be achieved through the provision of superior clinical training, academic excellence, convenient and affordable means of educating through online learning and the use of hands-on instructions from our certified instructors. To further accomplish its mission, Surgical Skillz team has a combine total of over forty years of surgical experience, with our experience and other team members with outstanding credentials as well, who have partnered with us to provide each student with the best training possible. Our training is design to help each Surgical Assistant function successfully within their scope of practice as defined by the American College of Surgeons. This is accomplished by fully completing all portions of the First Assistant Certificate Online Program. Occupational Objective: Graduates will have the ability and knowledge necessary to obtain employment as certified Surgical Assistants. They will be qualified to work as independent contractors, for private surgeons, or be employed by medical facilities as Surgical Assistants. The Surgical Skillz s First Assistant Online Program has eligibility requirements that must be met before students are eligible to sit for the ABSA national certifying exam to become a SA-C (Surgical Assistant Certified). Class Schedule SURG-6000 Surgical Anatomy SURG-6200 Surgical Basic Principles SURG-6400 Perioperative Management SURG-6600 Surgical First Assistant Clinical Entrance Requirements The School does not discriminate based on race, sex, religion, ethnic origin, or disability. To enroll in the Surgical Skillz First Assistant Online Program, students must provide proof of high school diploma (or GED equivalency) or highest level of education completed after high school. They must also provide proof of the prerequisite Surgical Technologist (ST) or Operating Room Nurse or Physician Assistant or Medical Doctor (Copy of Certification or License). Students must have a minimum 2 years of O.R. experience also provide Proof of professional liability insurance minimum of $1,000,000, if requested by clinical rotation facility. A current CPR or BLS certification (copy of certification) and Acceptable health and immunization records (MMR, TB, Hep-B) when requested by clinical rotation facility. Please call Program Director for exceptions (502-802-7360). Placement Assistance We do not offer placement assistant or make any guarantee. However, we will inform our students and graduates of any job opportunities we come across in the course of doing business with hospitals around the country. Current law prohibits any school from guaranteeing job placement as an inducement to enroll students. Satisfactory Progress In order to pass Surgical Skillz First Assistant Online Program, students must score 70% or greater on all the Course s Unit Tests. If they fail a Unit exams, and receive a pass on two signed first assistant evaluation forms from two surgeons or one surgeon and one OR management member. Grading System 100-90 A Excellent 89-80 B Above average 79-70 C Average Less than 69 F Failed Academic Probation: The student who fails any Course will be placed on academic probation. Upon successful completion of the next Course with an average of 70% or higher, the student will be removed from academic probation. Should a student fail the same Course twice, they may be terminated. Test Make up Policy: Should a student miss or fall short of the required 70% on any given Unit Test, they must make it up by preparing for and retaking said exam based on the date assigned by the instructor. Unit tests can only be retaken once! After retaking the test(s), the student will pass the Course as long as the Course GPA is 70% or above. If, however, the student does not prepare satisfactorily and does not retake the failed test(s) in the allotted time, the student will fail the Course and will be required retake the entire Course again when it becomes available. Educational Services Surgical Skillz First Assistant Online Training As defined by the American College of Surgeons, the Surgical First Assistant provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, and other technical functions that will help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. This role will vary considerably with the surgical operation, specialty area, and type of facility. Clinical skills performed under direct supervision of the surgeon may include the following: positioning the patient, preparing the skin, providing visualization of the operative site, utilizing appropriate techniques to assist with hemostasis, to assist with closure of body planes, selecting and applying appropriate wound dressings and providing assistance in securing drainage system to tissue. SURG-6000 Surgical Anatomy Surgical Anatomy 6 credit hours: The Surgical Anatomy course is designed to provide accurate information about the structure and function of human body. The course is planned for students who are pursuing a career as a surgical first assistant. Course instruction will relate anatomy to surgical techniques and an understanding of the disease processes and the relationship of the processes to the specific types of pathologies according to body systems. SURG-6200 Surgical Basic Principles Surgical Basic Principles 3 credit hours: The course is designed to introduce the student to the basic principles in surgical assisting. The course incorporates history of surgery, ethics in surgery, molecular and cell biology, the role of cytokines as mediators of inflammatory response, shock, electrolytes, fluid, hematologic principles in surgery, metabolism in surgical patients, wound healing, and critical assessment of surgical outcomes. SURG-6400 Perioperative Management Perioperative Management 3 credit hours: This course is designed to promote understanding in principles of preoperative/operative surgery, ultrasound for surgeons, surgical infections, choice of antibiotics, surgical problems in the immunosuppressed patient, surgical complications, surgery in the elderly, morbid obesity, anesthesiology principles, pain management, conscious sedation, minimally invasive surgery, emerging technology in surgery-informatics, electronics, and robotics. SURG-6600 Surgical First Assisting Clinical Surgical First Assistant Clinical 4 credit hours: In a clinical setting the student will perform the duties of a surgical first assistant during surgical procedures. Surgical First Assisting clinical are designed to provide student experience in a clinical setting, performing the duties of a surgical assistant include: positioning the patient, providing visualization of the operative site, utilizing appropriate techniques to assist with hemostasis, utilizing appropriate techniques in the closure of body planes, postoperative subcutaneous injection of local anesthetic agent as directed by the surgeon, selecting and applying appropriate wound dressings and securing drainage systems. The nature of the cases shall be varied according to the set standards for each certifying body. Surgical Skillz uses Surg-6600 as a tool to get hands on training for their students; therefore we recommend our students attain a minimum 135 cases. Outcomes Assessment Upon successful completion of the Surgical Skillz First Assistant Program, you will qualify for a national certifying exam the ABSA exam (Certification Examination for Surgical Assistant. Refund Policy Refund before the program of study starts: 1. To be considered for a refund, a student must submit a written notice of withdrawal to the institution. Notices of dismissal to a student must also be in written form. 2. (a) If a written notice of withdrawal is received less than (7) calendar days after the contract was made, the institution will return all funds paid except a $100 processing fee. a. Subject to subsection (2) (a), If written notice of withdrawals is received by the institution thirty (30) calendar days or more, before scheduled start date of program, the institution will retain 10% of the total fees due under the contract. b. Subject to subsection (2) (a), If written notice of withdrawal is received by the institution less than (30) calendar days, before scheduled start date of program, the institution may retain 20% of the total fees due under the contract. 3. Notwithstanding paragraph 2, the institution will refund all funds paid except a $200 processing fee for international students who; a. are denied authorization from Canada Immigration, or b. do not receive authorization prior to the start of a program of study, provided that i. the student notifies the institution of the circumstances in 3(a) or (b) on or before the first day of the program of study is scheduled to begin; and ii. the student, within a reasonable time, provides documentation of the circumstances in 3(a) or (b) to the school. Refund after the program of study starts: 1. a. if the institution receives a written notice of withdrawal, or a student is dismissed within (7) days of scheduled program start date, the institution may retain 30% of the total fees due under the contract. b. Subject to paragraph (4) (a), if the institution receives a written notice of withdrawal, or a student is dismissed, within (30) days of scheduled program start date; the institution may retain 50% of the total fees due under the contract. c.
