Robert Wood, M.D. Medical Director Robert Wood, M.D., is a craniofacial surgeon and the medical director of the Center for Craniofacial Services at Gillette Children s Specialty Healthcare in St. Paul, Minn. He received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School and completed a general surgery residency at Hennepin County Medical Center, Minneapolis. Wood trained in plastic surgery at Emory University, Atlanta. He went on to complete a fellowship in craniofacial surgery at New York University Medical Center. Active in craniofacial research, Wood helped pioneer current techniques in endoscopic surgery to remove facial masses. He also developed an intraoral bone expander and has an international reputation for his experience in resorbable fixation. He is a member of the American Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Association and the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons. In addition to holding certifications from the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Wood is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Cheryl Cermin, D.D.S. Orthodontist Cheryl Cermin, D.D.S., is an orthodontist at Gillette s Center for Craniofacial Services. Specializing in the orthodontic care of patients who need plastic and reconstructive surgery, Cermin uses an orthopaedic appliance for children who have cleft lips and palates. The appliance, called the OrthoCleft Retainer TM, is used before initial lip surgery to help pull the cleft areas together. It improves the ability of newborns to suck and swallow. Cermin holds bachelor of science and doctor of dental surgery degrees from the University of Minnesota. She completed a general practice residency at Brigham and Women s Hospital at Harvard School of Dentistry in Boston and an advanced graduate residency in orthodontics at the Goldman School of Dentistry at Boston University. She completed a fellowship in surgical orthodontics at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. Cermin is also an assistant clinical professor in the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and at Baylor College of Dentistry. She is a member of the American Dental Association, the American Association of Orthodontics and the American Cleft Palate Association. J. David Collier, D.D.S. Pediatric Dentist J. David Collier, D.D.S., recently joined Gillette as a pediatric dentist. Collier provides dental care for Gillette patients who have cerebral palsy, cleft lip and palate, and other disabilities. Collier received his doctorate of dental surgery degree from the University of Minnesota, where he also completed a pediatric dental residency. In addition to treating patients at Gillette, Collier practices at K.O.A.L.A. Dental Care in St. Cloud, Minn. His professional affiliations include memberships in the American Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Association, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and the Minnesota Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. He is available for appointments at our St. Paul campus.
Joseph Petronio, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.A.A.P. Neurosurgeon Joseph Petronio, M.D., is a neurosurgeon at Gillette s Center for Craniofacial Services. He graduated from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago and served residencies at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and Children s Hospital of Philadelphia. Petronio held a clinical fellowship in neuro-oncology and a postdoctoral fellowship in neurosurgery at the University of California in San Francisco. He also was a postdoctoral research fellow in neurosurgery, human molecular biology and genetics, and a clinical fellow in pediatric neurosurgery, at University of Utah/Primary Children s Medical Center in Salt Lake City. Petronio previously practiced at Emory University Affiliated Hospitals and Scottish Rite Children s Medical Center in Atlanta. His professional affiliations include memberships in the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. Petronio is also a fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Cheryl Shell, R.N., C.N.P. Pediatrics Nurse Practitioner Cheryl Shell is a pediatric nurse practitioner and program manager at Gillette s Center for Craniofacial Services. She provides assessments, and plans and implements care, for children with craniofacial disorders and craniofacial surgery needs. Shell earned a bachelor of science degree in nursing from Wichita State University in Kansas and a master of science degree, with a focus in advanced-practice pediatric nursing, from the University of Minnesota. As a graduate research assistant at the University of Minnesota, she coauthored a study, Impact of Genetic Potential and Prematurity on Growth Outcomes, which was published in Maternal Child Nursing. Shell is certified by the National Certification Board of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and Nurses and is a member of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Associates and Practitioners. She also is certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners and is a member of the International Lactation Consultant Association.
Paul Lim, M.D. Plastic Surgeon Paul Lim, M.D., is a plastic surgeon at Gillette s Center for Craniofacial Services. He treats children with conditions such as cleft lip and palate, plagiocephaly, torticollis, congenital nevi, hemangiomas, and congenital hand abnormalities. Lim received his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, where he also completed a general surgery residency. He completed a plastic surgery residency at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Lim sees patients at our St. Paul campus and Burnsville Clinic. Nancy Mendelsohn, M.D. Medical Geneticist Nancy Mendelsohn, M.D., is a medical geneticist working with Gillette s Center for Craniofacial Services. She provides diagnostic, counseling and case-management services to patients and families with congenital conditions, such as cleft lips and palates. People with personal or family histories of such conditions often benefit from the center s genetic counseling and testing services. We also offer information, education and support to our patients and their families. Mendelsohn earned a bachelor s degree in science from Indiana University and a medical degree from the University of Missouri School of Medicine. She served her residency in pediatrics and completed a fellowship in medical genetics at Washington University s St. Louis Children s Hospital in Missouri. She is an assistant professor in medical genetics in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the American Society of Human Genetics and the American College of Medical Genetics.
