4 Breast Reconstruction Surgery At the University of Chicago, we are proud to offer women advanced, cutting-edge reconstructive options that are at the forefront of medicine. Patients may choose from several different options for breast reconstruction: from using your own tissues to using implants or a combination of your own tissues and implants. Because we provide the full spectrum of reconstructive options we recommend an individualized plan for reconstruction that is based on your priorities, needs, and physique. 5 Burn and Complex Wound Care The Section of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery performs state-of-the-art reconstructive microsurgery for a wide range of difficult or complex wounds, including those stemming from head and neck cancer. We also provide treatment for patients who have sustained burn injuries from heat, electricity, chemicals, radiation, gases and thermal exposure. Our surgeons work collaboratively with other health care professionals to provide comprehensive care for both adult and pediatric patients. 6 Craniofacial Surgery Craniofacial and maxillofacial surgery encompasses surgery of the face, jaw, palate and skull. Craniofacial surgery can help a wide variety of congenital disorders and other problems by reconstructing the missing or damaged skeleton, correcting deformities of the skull, closing the palate and rebuilding facial features. The goal of craniofacial surgery is to improve appearance while also ensuring good function of the face, jaw, and skull. Our craniofacial & maxillofacial team is comprised of experts from several pediatric specialties, including plastic and reconstructive surgeons, neurosurgeons, otolaryngologists, ophthalmologists, dentists, geneticists, speech and language therapists, mental health experts, and radiologists. A new addition to the focused care we provide, The Craniofacial Anomalies Multidisciplinary Program (C.A.M.P.) at the University of Chicago provides a thorough and consolidated team approach for the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of children with craniosynostosis. This team, comprised of neurosurgeons, geneticists, plastic surgeons and radiologists, meets bi-monthly to evaluate patients with, and discuss treatment of complex craniofacial diagnoses. Some of the conditions our pediatric craniofacial & maxillofacial surgery team treats include:cleft lip & cleft palate, craniosynostosis, hemifacial microsomia, deformational or positional plagiocephaly and facial paralysis. 7 Cancer & Trauma Reconstruction/Laser Rejuvenation The University of Chicago Section of Plastic Surgery offers the most advanced reconstructive surgery of defects resulting from tissue injury using innovative bioengineering approaches to tissue replacement, regeneration and scar control. Cutting-edge bioengineering approaches are also utilized for body contouring needs such as abdomenoplasty and thigh lift. This expertise is particularly valuable to patients with peripheral nerve injuries, injuries or defects of the veins, neurofibromatosis, post-surgical abdominal wall defects, gynecological defects of the vulvovaginal complex, and those in need of cosmetic facial rejuvenation. 8 Hand Surgery & Rhinoplasty/Nasal Reconstruction The University of Chicago Plastic Surgery specializes in both hand surgery as well as rhinoplasty and nasal reconstruction. Hand surgery encompasses numerous conditions that result in hand impairments often from birth defects, trauma, tumor or blood vessel disease. The hand service at the University of Chicago is a multidisciplinary team that cares for patients with any and hand/upper extremity disorders. Our hand surgeons are plastic and orthopaedic faculty who have received specialized training in hand surgery. These surgeons hold Certificates of Added Qualifications in Hand Surgery and are certified by the American Boards of Plastic Surgery or Orthopaedic Surgery. Our Hand Service specializes in complex and difficult hand/upper extremity issues. The team has specially trained hand therapists to assist in rehabilitation therapy, splint fabrication and functional rejuvenation of hand surgery patients. Some of the unique surgical services provided at the University of Chicago hand service include: microsurgical toe-to-hand transfer, joint replacement surgery, digital sympathectomy, endoscopic wrist surgery, microsurgical nerve reconstruction and surgery of congenital hand deformities. The University of Chicago hand service has developed an innovative Cold Hand Clinic. The Cold Hand clinic provides a comprehensive complement of surgical and non-surgical therapy for all vascular disorders of the hand and upper extremity that lead to pain, ulceration, feeling cold and loss of sensitivity. These problems results from decrease blood flow to the hands and can be caused by many different diseases including Raynaud s, scleroderma, lupus and frostbite. The Cold Hand clinic provides advanced and pioneering interventions to improve and enhance hand health and lifestyle of patients with vascular disorders of the upper extremity. The University of Chicago plastic surgery service specializes in disorders of the nose. Our dedication is to provide an exceptional aesthetic result to both cosmetic and reconstructive nasal surgery. All patients who desire a better form of their nose are welcomed. Issues treated are deformities caused by previous trauma, surgery, skin disorders or cancer.
