Effective January 1, 2012, 17 types of electronics are banned from Illinois Landfills. Those items are: Televisions, Monitors, Printers, Computers (including tablet computers), Electronic Keyboards, Facsimile Machines, Videocassette Recorders (VCR), Portable Digital Music Players, Digital Video Disc (DVD) Players, Video Game Consoles, Small Scale Servers, Scanners, Electronic Mice, Digital Converter Boxes, Cable Receivers, Satellite Receivers, and Digital Video Disc Recorders. Computers and Electronics Illinois new Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act (Public Act 95-0959) placed the responsibility of implementing recycling & refurbishing electronics on the manufacturers of computers, televisions, computer monitors, and printers. The Act s most important feature for Illinois residents is that there can be no charge for residential electronics dropped off at a collection site, or if there is a fee, a dollar-for-dollar coupon good off the price of new equipment must be given in exchange. Charges are permitted for services like curbside collection or home pick-up.
