PartnerWithGoodwill Why Goodwill? When you donate to Goodwill, you help create jobs for people in your community. Your donations will be sent to our Community Stores, where they will be processed, priced, and sold. The revenues from our Community Stores go towards our mission to enable work opportunities and provide skills development for people facing barriers to employment. Hosting a donation drive is a great way for a group of community-minded people to clear out their unwanted items, while enabling the creation of more jobs in the community. It is also a great way to protect the environment by supporting the reuse of goods, diverting them from the landfill. We look forward to working with you to ensure that you maximize the potential for your event and are successful in achieving your donation goals. What is a Donation Drive? Timetable Tips For a Successful Donation Drive 2 to 3 Weeks Pre-event Review all of the information in the fundraising donation drive package. Decide an event period and email us at donationdrive@goodwill.on.ca or call 416-362-4711 ext. 4772. Be sure to complete and send us your Organization Info Sheet (attached to this package. Post event details on your website, on a marquee, or in your bulletin or newsletter to promote the drive. Get support of people in your office/work place, including senior administration staff, management and/or your company green team, if you have one. Decide the final date of the donation drive. It usually takes 1 week to promote and 1 week to collect. Set your target for how much you want to collect. If you create a challenge, decide on how to recnognize the winning team. Decide on the roles and responsibilties of the donation drive organizers. Review your plans with the company manager/appropraite administrators. Pre-collection is key to the success of your event. Start collecting right away. 1 to 2 Weeks Pre-event Keep promoting: advertise, prepare and hang posters throughout your community, distribute use word of mouth, email, newsletters, websites, Twitter, Facebook, etc. to get the word out. Schedule volunteers to be on site throughout the drive. Circulate motivational messages through social media. Employee paycheque stuffers could include info about the donation drive to generate awareness. A Company newsletter could announce the drive (be sure to take a picture of all the clothes you collected for the next edition). The dates on your promotional materials should indicate the dates of collection (not the promotional period leading up to the event). The day BEFORE the start of your donation drive, set up donation receiving areas in designated locations. If you have access to a large box or bin, you can use it to receive bags of clothes, otherwise you can outline a donation space on the floor with masking tape, with a poster on the wall above the taped space. Goodwill can provide you with bins upon request. A representative from your group or organization must be present at the event site at all times during your scheduled drive. 3
Timetable Tips For a Successful Donation Drive During the Event Make announcements or send reminder messages. Encourage people around you to donate. After the Event Thank everyone for participating. Announce the results. For example, how many bags of donations were collected, how high was the mountain of bags, who are the winners (if there was a challenge). Load the bags into your car(s) or van(s) and bring them to your nearest Goodwill. Ask the entire group to help load the vehicles - many hands make light work. When you arrive at the Goodwill Donation Centre, staff will be available to help you unload your vehicle. Check online at www.goodwill.on.ca to find the location and hours of your nearest Goodwill Donation Centre. Tell us your success story so we can share it with others. Send to marketing@goodwill.on.ca 4

FrequentlyAsked Questions Q: How long should the donation drive run for? A: This is open for your organization to decide. This is based on the pounds you want to receive Q: Would it cost me money to arrange the donation drive? A: Goodwill doesn t charge for organizing the donation drive. Q: Can I host a donation drive more than one time a year? A: Yes. You may hold a donation drive as many times as you would like. Q: What will you do with all the Donations? A: When your donations are brought to Goodwill, they will be sorted and graded. The items will then be sold in our Community Stores, the revenues from which create jobs at Goodwill, provide essential job training, and give people the skills to secure future employment. Donating to Goodwill also helps support the environment, diverting millions of pounds of items from landfills. Q: When is the best time to organize a Donation Drive and how long should it last? A: You can organize a Donation Drive at any time that is convenient for you and your colleagues. We recommend that your Donation Drive lasts two to three weeks (1 week for promotion + 1 week for collection). Longer periods may result in loss of interest. Q: Should we set a donation goal for our Donation Drive? A: You do not have to set a specific target for your Donation Drive. However, doing so can often be a useful tool to motivatepeople and generate interest amongst participants. Goodwill is grateful for all donations. 7
FrequentlyAsked Questions Q: Where should the donations be collected? A: You should find a visible/prominent location to set up your Donation Drive, such as the lunch room, front lobby, or main entrances. Q: Does Goodwill provide equipment to collect the donations? A: Yes, Goodwill can provide donation bins to assist with the collection process. The bins would have to be requested in advance. Q: How should individuals package their donated goods? A: Individuals shoudl bring their donated items in a tied plastic bag. Q: What type of donations does Goodwill need most of? A: Goodwill s needs change from month to month. However, it is important to remember to donate gently used items which are in good condition. They cannot be brocken, damaged, or soiled. Clothing, shoes, toys, sports equipment, books, accessories, CD s, and small, un-breakable household items are great items to donation. Furniture and breakable items are not suitable for a Donation Drive because they are too big and could break. The Guidelines page of the Donation Drive Kit contain a more thorough list of items you can and cannot donate. Q: Should we keep track of the amount of donations received during the Donation Drive? A: Goodwill does not need a record of how much has been donated during your Donation Drive. If your organization is running a challenge, it is important that you have your own form of measurements to update your tally. When the donations are brought to Goodwill, the total weight of all the items donated will be recorded. Q: Can we accept monetary donations on behalf of Goodwill? A: Goodwill does accept cash donations. Goodwill is a registered charitable organization with CRA and are able to issue tax receipts for donations worth $50 or more. Any cash donations must indicate a name and address to issue a receipt. 8
