1 - DESCRIPTION The PHASE MODULATOR UNIT mod. 205-01 operate at 70 MHz and can be modulated by external signals on two inputs TELECOMMAND and RANGING. The unit is fully controllable by a VME Bus and also the mechanical structure based on a 2Eu modules is designed to be inserted in a standard VME 6U subrack. One of the major characteristic of the Modulator Unit 205-01 is the capability to generate a 70 MHz carrier phase related to a reference (5 or 10 MHz) signal. This carrier can be swiped in a programmable range and with programmable offset for a selectable number of cycles. This function has been studied to generate a sweeping sequence used to explore the satellite receiving range, to lock it and to restore the earth zero frequency offset. All the sweeping function are numerically controlled by means and NCO circuitry for maximum reliability and repeatability of the sequences. Low phase noise and high modulating index of the generated carrier are also very important characteristics of the unit. By VME command it is possible to select RANGING Modulation, TELEMETRY Modulation or both modulation together. The Phase Modulator Unit mod. 205-01 include also an internal demodulator for local loop test purpose. It is possible to demodulate the incoming modulation also during the sweeping cycles. Unit design include state of the art technology for the internal high resolution NCO, linear modulation circuitry and the use of FPGAs to improve reliability and space saving. 02/06 B 3/12

4 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS The PHASE MODULATOR UNIT mod. 205-01 is fully controllable via VME BUS. See system software control instructions set for detail. The generated 70 MHz signal is available at the IF 1 and IF2 outputs connectors when the CARRIER ON conditions is set. A green led IF ON give the adequate indication. Two modulating inputs RNG and TLC make it possible to modulate the generated carrier. Two green leds RNG ON and TLC ON gives to the operator the relevant indication. A demodulated video signal is available on the DEM OUT connector with a total bandwidth of 32 KHz and a sensitivity of 1 Vp/Rad. With an internal potentiometer is it possible to adjust the demodulator sensitivity. The output signal is valid only in lock conditions. The units must be connected to a reference signal at 5 or 10 MHz and sine level of 10 +/- 5 dbm via the REF FREQ Connector. In case of wrong or absence of the reference signal a red alarm Led ( REF ALARM) lits. An additional RS232 connector is provided on the front panel for factory use only. With this port during final tests is it possible to download to the internal E2PROM the data relevant to the operating parameters. The two digit display in the top of the front panel is used only to control the operating function F** during VME Data Bus Access. 02/06 B 8/12
