Introduction On the following pages, the reader will find information about the client population that Daytop served during the fiscal year 6-7 in its diverse treatment programs. This report provides demographic, drug history, psychosocial, and vocational information for individuals who received services in Daytop s New York State and New Jersey treatment programs from July 1, 6, through June 3, 7. In addition, the report presents information about retention rates and discharge patterns for Daytop residential and outpatient treatment during the same time period. Daytop operates treatment centers for substance abuse and dependence in New York State and New Jersey. Number of Clients Served NEW YORK Daytop New York operates eight (8) outpatient programs in and around New York City. For clients who require higher levels of care, residential treatment is offered in two (2) adolescent and seven (7) adult residential facilities, including Daytop s Assessment and Referral and Re-entry Units. However, the proportion of Caucasian/white clients increased by 2% in both residential and outpatient treatment, continuing a trend from last year. Three percent (3%) of residential and outpatient parents have a current case with Child Protective Services, and 3% and 2%, respectively, have children in the Foster Care System. Two thirds of residential clients report either Heroin, Crack or Cocaine to be their primary drug. Cocaine use is high in both populations, but the proportion of Heroin and Crack use is significantly higher among clients entering residential treatment. In addition, 6% of residential, and 46% of outpatient clients report that they regularly smoke cigarettes. 12

Adult Client Admissions Adult clients in residential treatment generally display higher rates of co-existing mental health disorders and personal experiences that may induce or exacerbate mental health problems. The rates of legal involvement among admitted clients increased by 18% in residential, and 5% in outpatient treatment compared to last year s rates, Of those with a recent criminal record, 35% of clients had at least one arrest in the past 6 months. More than one quarter of residential clients report an extensive treatment history of more than three episodes, this rate represents an increase of 4% over last year s admissions. On the other hand, for more than one quarter of outpatient clients, the current admission is their first treatment for substance abuse problems. This rate is also increased by 4% over last year s rate. 15

Self and family referrals are significantly more prominent in residential than outpatient treatment. Social services referrals are more common in outpatient than residential treatment. Similarly, the number of African- American clients admitted to outpatient treatment dropped by 2%, while the rate of white clients increased by 2%. Methamphetamine use was reported by a total of 6 adolescents this year. One fifth of adolescent clients report use of a variety of other drugs, including club drugs, other opiates, and a number of prescription drugs. In addition, 6% of residential, and 41% of outpatient clients report that they regularly smoke cigarettes. 23
