The School of Medicine and the Health System are often referred to together as Penn Medicine. Penn s School of Medicine is currently ranked #2 in the nation in U.S. News & World Report s survey of top researchoriented medical schools. The School of Medicine supports over 1,800 fulltime faculty, over 1300 MD and PhD students, and is recognized worldwide for its superior education and training of the next generation of physician-scientists and leaders of academic medicine. Penn Medicine Information Services Key Technology Environment Components Penn Medicine has invested heavily in information technology over the last decade, and is investing about $95 million dollars in IT during the current FY11 fiscal year. Penn Medicine employs over 300 professionals in its Information Systems division, and is perennially cited as one of the nation s Most Wired Hospitals. The Sunrise Clinical Manager CPOE system from -Allscripts is implemented at all hospitals for 100 percent inpatient computer provider order entry -- a rate achieved by fewer than 10% of other health care organizations. Sunrise Clinical Manager System Sunrise Pharmacy (SRx) is a full-featured pharmacy information system that enables pharmacists to quickly review and verify orders, and then safely dispenses medications. The order entry feature offers advanced clinical decision support for checking medication contraindications. Dr. Lee Goldberg Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant Program Medical Director Other key systems include: An updated Cerner Millennium Laboratory Information System, implemented in 2008. A successful internally developed Emergency Department system called Emtrac, which enables 100 percent CPOE and documentation supporting over 175,000 ED visits per year. An internally developed web-based medical record aggregator, called MedView, which provides an integrated read-only view of the data of all health system patients by drawing information in real time from multiple legacy systems. Approximately 15 million hits per year are made by physicians from this portal. A patient portal, mypennmedicine, has 40,000 members participating since 2008 offering members electronic means to access their doctor s office online for services such as requesting medication renewals, referral requests and accessing normal lab results. Penn Access Manager (PAM) is an enterprise-wide capability to access to multiple applications with a single sign on while following the patient context between systems. Since February 2011, Penn has completed 100% of its roll-out of the EpicCare ambulatory EMR system to all 1,800 physicians and health system outpatient practices, including all practices in the new Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine. All order entry is now fully electronic across the enterprise. The Penn Data Store is an internally developed virtual data warehouse currently containing over 1.4 billion rows of information. This powerful repository leverages the electronic information captured by our key systems, offering a one-stop comprehensive experience for physicians and researchers by allowing them to easily combine data and perform analysis thus extending health system safety and quality goals to meet the research mission. mypennmedicine Homepage
Penn Data Health Network Connectivity & Infrastructure - Supporting a large, complex environment Most clinical systems are connected through an e-gate interface engine which is configured in a high availability cluster environment. Penn hospitals, data centers, and other facilities are connected by a 10 Gigabit fiber-optic ring with 1 Gigabit speed to all new desktops and at least 100 Megabit speed to all existing desktops. One of Penn Medicine s two data centers, located at 3440 Market Street, less than one mile from the main hospital, contains 7,000 square feet of floor space and has 240 tons of HVAC capacity. The data centers are connected via two 10G Verizon communication links. Power is provided by dual power utility feeds with manual cutover. Equipment is powered through an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system with generator backup. The facility employs a halon fire suppression system, Cardkey door access system, recorded security cameras, and is staffed 24hours/ day x 7 days/week x 365 days/year. A second data center, leased from the Computer Sciences Corporation in Newark, Delaware houses 600 servers, and occupies 1,232 square feet of equipment space with 176 square feet of expansion space available. The Information Services department at Penn Medicine currently supports over 1,200 servers which span the continuum of Intel - based and midrange platforms. In terms of an operating system, the I.S. department currently supports Windows and Linux. Regarding storage, Penn Medicine uses EMC and Intel based storage technologies and supports over 450TB. SQL and Oracle are the primary database platforms. There are over 200 databases currently being managed by the Information Services team. Penn Medicine manages over 20,000 desktops and laptops. These devices are centrally managed on the MS SCCM platform. The devices are engineered to an enterprise standard for consistency and a lower total cost of ownership.

Technology Awards & Accolades As an eight time Most Wired in health care recipient, the information services department of Penn Medicine provides support for the applications, systems and technologies that support the Penn Medicine mission. From a patient care perspective, Penn Medicine information technology (IT) focuses its efforts on the clinical and financial systems that support the day-to-day operations of three hospitals, several satellite practices and more than 2,000 physicians. Michael Restuccia Vice President, CIO Michael Restuccia is the Vice President and Chief Information Officer of Penn Medicine. Mr. Restuccia has over twenty-five years of health care information technology experience and has worked nearly all his career in the health care information technology provider, vendor and consulting services industries. Prior to joining Penn Medicine in 2008, Mr. Restuccia served as President of MedMatica Consulting Associates, a health care information technology consulting firm that has been recognized as a three time recipient of the Inc. Magazine 5,000 Fastest Growing, Privately Held Companies in the US and the Philadelphia 100 Fastest Growing, Privately Held Companies in the Philadelphia region.
