DDoS Simulation Distributed Denial of Service Load Testing 2013-04-10 ver. 1.3
1. Background In computing, a denial-of-service attack (DoS attack) or distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS attack) is an attempt to make a machine or network resource unavailable to its intended users. Although the means to carry out, motives for, and targets of a DoS attack may vary, it generally consists of the efforts of one or more people to temporarily or indefinitely interrupt or suspend services of a host connected to the Internet. Perpetrators of DoS attacks typically target sites or services hosted on high-profile web servers such as banks, credit card payment gateways, and even root name servers. 2. Executive summary DDoS simulation Service The main objective is to create a DDoS simulation as realistic as possible, and to provide and execute test scenarios that will enable performance testing on the target site and the supporting infrastructure, or on an available staging environment. Load Impact can do just that with the exception of the DDoS parameter Distributed, which we can provide with some limitations; up to 200 IP addresses from 8 nodes (Load centers) around the world. We can configure the script to generate dynamical and randomized URL calls etc. to simulate unpredictable user behaviors and as realistic as possible. 3. Features & functionality Large scale load tests with up to 250,000 concurrent users Up to 200 IP addresses Multiple user scenarios Extremely accessible; Instant setup and payments options, Pay-as-you-go Pure On-demand, non-invasive Cloud service Multiple Geographic distribution of load Palo Alto, USA Portland, USA Ashburn, USA Sao Paolo, Brazil Dublin, Ireland Singapore, Singapore Tokyo, Japan Sydney, Australia Real-time testing Session recorder Detection of error source with Server Metrics extended and enhanced reporting functionality Advanced test scripting Multiple scripting editors Automatic script generation Flexible scheduling Browser emulation Intuitive UI Powerful reporting Google Analytics integration API/white- labeling options loadimpact.com/features
4. Example of Graphs & reports Graph 1. Test 1: Note the spike in the beginning, this might be because of cold caches and the amount of loads dropping is due to the ramp-up and running period and the time the test was running. Graph 2. Test 2: Notice how the load-times remains about the same regardless of load-level except for in the beginning where the load-times was a bit higher (probably due to cold caches). 5. Professional Services Most companies with outward-facing dynamic websites face the same challenges: pages must load quickly, infrastructure must scale efficiently, and sites and services must be reliable, without burning out the team or breaking the budget. Knowing how much traffic your website can handle helps you plan for hardware upgrades or optimization work. This leads to shorter load times, which in turn increases user satisfaction. In the end, visits, user retention and sales for your site will go up. We can assist you to simulate a large number of users to your website, from multiple countries and browsers, to find out under what conditions your website will slow down dramatically and which components within the website caused this slow down.
Load Impact has over 10 years of experience in the load testing field. Unlike software-based load testing solutions run locally, we are able to simulate real, external traffic to your site over the Internet. We have a clear channel strategy and have a long-term experience in collaborating efficiently with your preferred hosting/system integration partner and/or your Test & QA partner. We offer sophisticated testing and comprehensive analyses of test results, as well as solid recommendations how you can improve the performance of your sites. We plan, configure and execute your load test precisely according to your needs and requirements. We will also provide a detailed report that includes both the results and recommendations for performance optimization, if any. Development of relevant & realistic user-scenarios Sophisticated performance test executions Comprehensive analyses of test results Solid recommendations, guidance and optimization advice on how to improve performance loadimpact.com/consulting 6. About Load Impact Load Impact, is the leading Cloud-based On-demand tool for performance testing. Since 2009, thousands of satisfied customers and partners have conducted more than 750,000 performance tests by using Load Impact's cost-efficient Cloud-service. Load Impact has earned the trust of a large customer base of over 60,000 active accounts in 190 countries that continuously uses the service to ensure the quality of their online presence. This allows each company to operate the appropriate amount of infrastructure resources, and to spot potential performance problems before they become an issue, providing an accurate, scalable and proactively optimized service to the end user. Leading Cloud-based tool for Load testing Simulate hundreds of thousands users Load test with a few clicks, automate or refine Minimize revenue losses & conversion problems 750,000+ tests, 60,000+ accounts, 190+ countries Over 10 years of QA & testing experience 7. References Although Load Impact has thousands of satisfied customers, many of our clients do not wish to be exposed that they are using our services, because of strategic, security and marketing reasons. Never the less we would like to highlight some of our recent customer success cases (not official): In the end of 2012 we carried out crucial performance tests for a famous Energy Drink. The marketing site was successfully launched after our Performance test, bottleneck detection actions and optimization advice, with millions of concurrent users/visitors. We also recently completed our largest test-case (so far): Configuration of a performance tests for a booking service, with 250,000+ concurrent users, for one of Europe's largest Telecom operators. support.loadimpact.com/knowledgebase/topics/29110-case-studies

The State of Web Readiness Report Load impact continuously conducts and compiles a report called The State of Web Readiness Report. Next report will be released in end of April 2013, and will have a specific focus on E-Commerce. Based on both load test results and a user survey from the users of Load Impact s load testing service. Results from 5,240 load tests executed in 118 countries and 538 user survey responses were analyzed. User survey was performed during September-October 2012. Load tests were executed during the third quarter of 2012. loadimpact.com/readiness
