What is Broadband? Broadband is a combination of two words, broad bandwidth fast, always on internet connection simply: it allows a large amount of data to travel through a medium at the same time The faster the broadband, the more you can do. (Speeds are measured in both download and upload.) The definition of what is considered a fast speed changes regularly as available speeds are ever increasing

What can Broadband do for your business? Broadband can reduce your costs for fast always-on Internet access. Because it's a flat rate price, you can predict your communications costs. use your phone line for voice at the same time Broadband improves your contact with your customers, by allowing you to respond to queries or orders more quickly.

What can Broadband do for your business? Employees will have a permanent connection to online services and continuous access to email. Employees can work from home with broadband seamlessly connecting them to the main office. Broadband can increase productivity by enabling the transfer of large data files directly from local offices to head offices located in other cities, or even other countries.

What are the types of Broadband available in Ireland? DSL- Broadband access over your regular telephone line. Cable- Broadband services provided over your cable TV connection. Wireless- Broadband (including mobile) using radio waves to your premises Satellite- Broadband transmitted via satellite. Leased line-broadband using dedicated private circuits.

Which solution is right for you? What are your broadband needs? number of users Website Security bundled services real time service Value added services Customer support and services

Which solution is right for you? Required applications Geographical location Budget Note that there is usually more than one form of broadband solution to match requirements Reliable customer support and services Cost effective products

Speeds/Costs Speeds of 6MBits/s,10MBits/s and 24 Mbit/s are available Cost varies greatly: 14-60 (incl VAT) per month Shop Around Short term contract Review broadband services/costs regularly Switching Broadband provider can result in huge savings ComReg website www.callcosts.ie

Types of Technologies available Wireless/Mobile Broadband Access Radio signals No telephone signal required Receiving antenna on customer premises This type of technology often requires a line of sight to the receiving device

Types of Technologies available Fixed DSL is a family of related technologies that bring high-speed network access to homes and small businesses over ordinary telephone lines Can use your phone line for voice and data at the same time DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) and ADSL (Asymetric Digital Subscriber Line) are contigent on the distance between the HUB and home and continuity is lost as distance increses.

Types of Technologies available Cable Cable uses a special type of modem that connects to a local cable TV line to provide a continuous connection to the internet. Like a dial-up modem, a cable modem is used to send and receive data, but the difference is that transfer speeds are much faster and can be more reliable Most TV cable companies own their own Network and do not rely on third party networks Cable Modem uses the Cable TV feed to your home and so is restricted to those areas that have a Cable TV Provider.

Types of Technologies available Satellite Satellite customer equipment is also easily movable and so a company relocating can bring their satellite broadband connection with them. The install fee and monthly rental for satellite service is typically higher available in any location in Ireland latency (time delay)

Types of Technologies available Mobile Broadband 3G mobile network you can connect to the Internet from any location where there is 3G services portable modem: data card, Bluetooth external dongle, or a USB device Limited reception, smaller bandwidth than a land line
