Welcome to Oakridge Summer School Oakridge Public Schools is offering credit recovery during Summer School via ONLINE CLASSES! While online classes can range from the most simple, self paced tutorials to highly interactive, instructor led, contentrigorous experiences, Oakridge offers a blend of Michigan aligned content, self paced tutorials, and a certified teacher facilitated environment. Online learning does have its benefits and pitfalls. The benefits can include expanding the curriculum offerings beyond what many individual schools and school districts are able to provide; offering student opportunities for credit recovery; and focusing on the individual learner in a new and unique way through enhanced communication and delivery tools, as well as the anytime, anywhere method of deliver. The potential pitfalls for those who venture into this modality can include the lack of student self discipline and motivation to work in a self paced environment; the inability to keep up with ongoing, sometimes rigorous expectations without the constraints of a fixed time and place setting; and the isolation that may occur from this form of individual learning. To take advantage of the benefits, Oakridge Summer School will allow all enrolled students individual access to a computer, a high speed fiber optic network, and highly engaging online courses. To avoid the potential pitfalls mentioned, the HS Media Center Computer Lab will be open for defined hours with a certified teacher to mentor, coach, and facilitate students toward successful completion of the course. We believe this will offer a best of both worlds option for students to regain credit. Welcome to the Oakridge Summer School! 3
Admissions Policies Registration Registration will be handled on a first come, first served basis. However, Oakridge students will receive priority registration through June 16. Early registration is encouraged. The Summer School Application in this handbook may be mailed, faxed, or dropped off at the registration location listed below. Seating capacity is 30 students in each session. You may turn in your application with full payment to reserve your place in the class Before you register, it is important that you discuss with your counselor the class(es) you need to take. The application must be signed by your counselor or principal and your parent or legal guardian. Registration Fees Oakridge School Students: Out of District Students: $50 per session (complete as many credits as possible during 1 session). See recommendation for number of sessions on page five. $150.00 per ½ credit Please make check or money order payable to Oakridge Public Schools. Registration fees are non refundable after the opening start time of each session Oakridge students will receive priority registration until June 16. After that, all registrations will be processed in the order received for available seats. Full payment must be made when registering for each class. Payment plans are available in special circumstances upon request, but must be approved by the principal. Payment in full should be received before summer school starts. Registration Preferred Deadline June 10 Students may not begin attending summer school until registration and payment in full is made. We prefer registration/payment be made by June 10. However, we accept late registration/ payment if a student wishes to begin after the start date of summer school. This is not recommended because of limited time slots available. Late registrations will be accepted until July 5 (no later) if seats are available. Summer School Dates and Times Summer School is scheduled June 20 July 29 (Monday Friday) with the following sessions available for students to attend: Session 1 June 20 July 8 (8 noon) no school on July 4 Session 2 June 20 July 8 (12:30 4:30) no school on July 4 Session 3 July 11 July 29 (8 noon) Session 4 July 11 July 29 (12:30 4:30) Even though a student may complete as many credits possible during 1 session, it is recommended that: If a student wishes to earn a ½ credit, he/she must register for 1 session If a student wishes to earn 1 full credit, he/she should register for 2 sessions If a student wishes to earn a 1½ or 2 credits, he/she should register for 3 4 sessions Oakridge Public Schools reserve the right to cancel time slots due to low enrollment. Please sign up early to ensure sessions are offered. Academic Policies Recognition of Credit Oakridge Summer School does not grant credit. A detailed report of the performance in the course will be provided to the sending school s counselor to determine whether credit will be granted. Credit and Grading Grading reports will be delivered to the home high school as a percentage (0% to 100%). The high school that enrolls the student will determine the amount of credit and the equivalent grade in either letter or GPA format once the number of hours required to complete the online course is verified and matched with that of the regular high school curriculum. Honors points, weighting and other special considerations will be made at the discretion of the student s local school, and should be decided prior to the enrollment of students. Required Materials Pencils, pens, and notebooks are the student s responsibility. All instructional materials will be provided. Attendance Attendance is mandatory until the course is successfully completed. This provides incentive for students to show up and stay on task. More than one (1) absence for any reason will result in loss of credit for the course. If an absence is necessary, you must notify the onsite student mentor in advance no excuses for not calling ahead. Excused absences will only be approved for medical and family emergencies vacation time is not excusable! Again, once students successfully complete a course, they will no longer need to attend the remainder of the session. Transfer Credit The student s local high school will have the responsibility and authority to make a designation on a student s transcript in accordance with their local policies regarding other transfer credits (e.g. home school and dual enrollment courses). 5
Academic Integrity Proficiency: Although Oakridge Summer School is an online learning environment, offline exams and tests may be given and proctored by the onsite student mentor to ensure proficiency of the course content. Cheating: The same policies that are applicable to cheating or other dishonesty issues will apply to students in this online environment. Also, it is the expectation that a student will conduct him/herself in compliance with all student rules and regulations in the Oakridge High School Handbook. If inappropriate behavior is reported while a student is participating in an online course, the student s home school may take appropriate disciplinary action as is deemed necessary to correct and discontinue such behavior. The student may be denied future attendance at Oakridge Summer School, thereby, denying him/her the opportunity to earn or recover credit. Technology Access All students taking online courses will have access to a computer during scheduled summer school hours. Students must complete all online coursework at the Oakridge High School location. All students will be given 60 hours of computer access to complete the online course. A student who has not completed the course in the time allotted may, on an individual basis, be granted additional time to complete. Appropriate Behavior and Use of Technology All students and teachers participating in online courses are expected to conduct their communications in a professional, respectful manner as outlined in the Oakridge Student Handbook. The use of proper Internet etiquette is expected at all times. Inappropriate language or behavior will result in disciplinary action and possible termination from the online provider of a course and at the discretion of the local school. An Acceptable Use Policy regarding the use of technology, including the Internet must be signed at the time of enrollment. Consequently, procedures outlined in the Acceptable Use Policy will apply to all online courses. Student Mentor/Instructor As online learning continues to grow, the importance of having an adult who is responsible for overseeing the student s progress is vital. The role of the Oakridge Summer School Student Mentor/Instructor is simply that of a caring adult who can monitor the work and progress of the student and offer technical support assistance. The student mentor may or may not be a content or topic specialist that can give instructional guidance in the subject area of any particular student s course work. The instruction is provided within the online course. How To Be Successful in an Online Course To be successful in an online course, a student must be a self starter with a strong sense of direction and the ability to set goals and follow through. A successful online student can work independently, stay on task and maintain a regular schedule of logging on and keeping up with the readings, course assignments, homework and other expectations. The content of online courses is generally as rigorous (or as difficult) as that found in a face to face classroom course. In some cases, online courses require regular interaction with the instructor and frequently the other students in a course. There is no way to sit in the back and be silent in an online course! As stated above, Oakridge will provide a certified teacher onsite to support, encourage, and mentor the student toward successful completion of the course. However, it is the student s responsibility to stay on task to complete the course. Any student who thinks that taking a course online will be easy may be surprised. An online course is different, not necessarily easier or harder, and the added factor of self motivation and discipline may cause additional challenges. These factors must be taken into consideration and carefully assessed to determine the potential for student success, retention, and continued interest in online learning for future career and educational advancement. 6

Inquiries concerning Title II, Title VI, Title IX, and Section 504 may be referred to the Director of Academic Programs. ADA Compliance Qualified students with disabilities needing appropriate adjustments should contact the Director of Academic Programs (231.788.7100) or Onsite Student Mentor before registering for an online course to ensure needs are met in a timely manner. Nonpublic and Home Schooled Students Nonpublic and home schooled children may participate in Oakridge Summer School course offerings to the same extent that they are allowed to participate in school district course offerings under PA 230 and the state school aid act of 1979, 1979 PA 94, MCL 388.1601 to 388.1772. 7
Middle and High School Credits Available for Recovery These courses are the only courses available for credit recovery at Oakridge Summer School. They offer a high degree of learner independence. There is not an instructor assigned to these online courses, however, the on site student mentors have the option to assign/grade off line content and exempt online content. These courses have pre and post assessments and mastery is achieved if the student earns an 80% or higher on the assessment. SUMMER SCHOOL RULES AND GUIDELINES Students should report directly to the HS Computer Lab room 140. Students may enter the building at the main entrance doors of Oakridge High School on 5493 E. Hall Road. Students needing to park a car may use the parking lot off of East Hall Road just west of Oakridge High School. Parents/guardians who provide transportation for their students may utilize the bus drop off ramp. Snacks and beverages are not allowed in the computer lab. Attendance is mandatory until successful completion of course/credit. A medical excuse or family emergency will be the only absence excuse accepted (limited to one day). 30 minutes of tardiness equals one absence. Typical school rules always apply. We will adhere to the guidance in the Oakridge High School Handbook. No bare midriffs or halter tops allowed. This program is offered to assist students that need extra help or have credits to make up. Behavioral concerns and disruptions will not be tolerated. If discipline is necessary, the student may lose the credit being attempted. All cell phones must be silenced while in the building. Cell phones may only be used outside of the building during the student break. Due to the online courses providing audio tutorials/instruction via headphones, music devices are only allowed during breaks. Failure to comply with a teacher request to turn down the volume will result in a loss of the privilege. Use of any tobacco products on school property is illegal. Use, possession of, or being under the influence of drugs or alcohol is illegal. Disregard for these rules will result in school personnel contacting law enforcement. Unsafe or disruptive driving practices will result in suspension or loss of parking privileges. School phones are not to be used by students unless permission is given by a staff member. Sleeping in class is not permitted. The consequence for sleeping in class will be that the parent/guardian will be notified and could result in loss of credit for the course. 10
