Portswood and St Mary s Partnership Equality Information and Objectives 2012-2013

Equality Information We recognise that the public sector equality duty has three aims and they are to: Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and other conduct under the Act; Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not; Foster good relations between people who have a shared characteristic and those who do not. The policy outlines the commitment of the staff and Governors to promote equality. This involves tackling the barriers which could lead to unequal outcomes so that there is equality of access and the diversity within the school community is celebrated and valued. We believe that equality at our school should permeate all aspects of school life and is the responsibility of every member of the school and wider community. Every member of the school community should feel safe, secure, valued and of equal worth The Leadership Team and Governors at Portswood and St Mary s are proactive in reviewing School evidence. The school takes positive action to advance equality and tackle discrimination and how well we achieve these aims with regard to the protected groups under the Equality Act (race, disability, gender, gender re-assignment, age, pregnancy and maternity, marital status, sexual orientation, religion and belief and sexual orientation.), E.G. through our Equality Policy, Behaviour Policy and Anti Bullying Policy. Our School Improvement plan refers directly to closing the gaps for all vulnerable groups, our collective worship policy references diverse cultural groups and acknowledges the richness of diversity that exists within our community and wider world. The school s termly self-evaluation document analyses vulnerable groups. Our prospectus and occasional letters to parents and carers remind our community of our collective duty to PSE. Our School Improvement Plan is focussed on securing and maintaining excellent teaching, learning and assessment for all pupils. Data analysis and subsequent support deployment aims to narrow the gaps in achievement between different groups and national standards. The school s Behaviour Policy aims to ensure that pupils are free from bullying in all its manifestations including all types of prejudice-based bullying. As a school we aim to foster an enriched learning environment which puts the child at the centre of a cohesive learning community and deals with unacceptable behaviour and disruptions to learning in a prompt, open and fair way.

Curriculum A full curriculum review is taking place in both schools ensuring that there is coverage in the curriculum of equalities issues, particularly with regard to tackling prejudice and promoting community cohesion and understanding diversity. There are activities across the curriculum that promotes pupils spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Promoting Equality: Countering and Challenging Harassment and Bullying The school counters and challenges all types of discriminatory behaviour and this is made clear to staff, pupils, parents and governors; The school has a clear, agreed procedure for dealing with prejudice related bullying incidents and has a nominated member of staff responsible for recording and monitoring incidents; The school reports to Governors, parents and LA on an annual basis the number of prejudice related incidents recorded in the school. Promoting Equality: Partnerships with Parents/Carers and the Wider Community The school aims to work in partnership with parents/carers. We: Take action to ensure all parents/carers are encouraged to participate in the life of the school; Maintain good channels of communication, e.g. through parent forums, to ensure parents views are captured to inform practice; Encourage members of the local community to join in school activities and celebrations; Ensure that the parents/carers of newly arrived pupils e.g. EAL, Gypsy, Roma and Traveller or pupils with disabilities are made to feel welcome. Equality Objectives We aim to provide the highest possible quality education. The ethos of our schools clearly reflects our commitment to fully including, respecting and supporting all members of our school community whatever their cultural background, belief, gender, race or disability. We have set ourselves the following equality objectives:- To narrow the gap between vulnerable children and the national average attainment Average Point Score in English Maths and Science.
