Newcastle Grammar School Uniform Guidelines Years 7-12 Our School uniform unites us as a community. It fosters teamwork and School spirit. It is also an outward sign of self-respect, develops self-regulation and allows our students to benefit from a positive image of our School in the wider community. Therefore, the students of Newcastle Grammar School are encouraged to wear their School uniforms correctly and well. Dresses/Skirts Shirts/Blouses Ties Belts Hats Scarves and Gloves Shoes Socks and Stockings Hem length is to be no higher than crease at back of knee To be kept tucked in at all times Tied up correctly in a half-windsor or Windsor knot To be worn all year by boys To be worn by girls with the Winter Uniform Plain black leather or leather-look with a plain buckle Hats are to be worn at recess, lunchtime and PE during Terms 1 and 4 for sun protection. Girls will be asked to wear their hat on formal occasions. Navy scarves and gloves may be worn with winter uniform. They must be removed when directed by a Staff member (e.g. during Science practical lessons) Shoes must be maintained in a good condition, kept clean and polished. School shoes need to be: - Black, hard leather, polished, flat - lace-up (girls may also choose from t-bar/buckled styles in addition to laceup) - not slip-on styles, boots or sport shoes The final decision regarding the appropriateness of a shoe s style or condition is made at the discretion of the School. Students will be asked to purchase new or replacement shoes as necessary. Boys: Grey School socks (available from the Uniform Shop) Girls: Summer - Years 7-10: White socks (long enough to be turned over above the ankle) Years 11-12: Black sockettes or black short ankle socks Winter - The appropriate socks or/ Navy (ink) stockings (40-70 Dernier) may be worn with Winter uniform (Years 7-12) NB During winter, stockings MUST be worn for all formal occasions including performances
Hairstyles Grooming Makeup, Nail Polish and Tattoos Jewellery Hair should be kept clean and neatly groomed at all times. For boys, hair should be: - a conservative style ( short back and sides is the preferred style) - maintained above the collar - long strands of hair which fall across the face, are not acceptable - a natural colour - not to be shaved, nor extremely cut with clippers (No. 3 is the shortest acceptable cut) - controlled using hair product if necessary For girls, hair should be: - a conservative style - tied back with regulation school ribbons, scrunchies or hair elastics (black or hair coloured) if long enough to touch the shoulders - pulled back from the face (long strands of hair which fall across the face are not acceptable) - a natural colour The final decision on hairstyle will always be at the discretion of the School. Students will be directed to have their hair style or colour modified if necessary. Boys are to come to school cleanly shaven each day. 'Side burns' are not to be exaggerated nor long. The growing of stubble, beards or moustaches is not permitted both during term time and when attending School functions Make-up and nail polish are not permitted. Students will be asked to remove both. No visible tattoos are permitted Jewellery may not be worn as part of the uniform, with the following exceptions: - Medic-Alert bracelets or necklaces - Girls may wear a small single sleeper or plain stud earring in the lobe of each ear - Girls may wear one plain ring - Necklaces (including crucifixes) must not be visible Boys are not permitted to wear jewellery. Other visible piercings are not permitted whilst at School or School functions nor when wearing the School uniform. Jewellery may be confiscated for the duration of the current term should students require constant reminders Guidelines for the Wearing of the School Uniform 1. Summer uniform will be worn during Terms 1 and 4 and part of Term 2 depending on the weather. 2. During the terms when summer uniform is worn, the wearing of blazers to and from school is not compulsory. At this time, the wearing of School knitwear to and from School without blazers is permitted. 3. Winter uniform will be generally worn from part-way through Term 2 to the end of Term 3. The wearing of blazers to and from School is compulsory when in winter uniform. 4. During winter girls must wear stockings (not socks) to all formal occasions including performances. 5. All items of clothing must be clearly named. NB: If weather is unseasonal 1, 2, 3 will be varied at the Head s discretion.
Sports and PE Uniforms PE lessons House sports carnivals Co-curricular activities that occur externally to the School or/ when representing the School for sporting events School PE sports polo or School House polo. School PE sports shorts; White sport socks (NB. striped sports socks are being phased out but can still be worn). School rugby jumper and/or tracksuits may also be worn. or cap must be worn in Terms 1 and 4 School House polo. Sport specific uniforms, e.g. Netball dresses, Futsal uniforms etc. as required Guidelines for the Wearing of PE/Sports Uniforms During the School Day 1. Students are to change into School Uniform after morning co-curricular training sessions, before the School day begins (unless they have a practical PE lesson in period 1). 2. Students should change into and out of PE Uniform at the beginning and end of their scheduled practical PE lessons (unless they have a practical PE lesson in period 6 which is then followed by an afternoon cocurricular training session). 3. Students are to change into Sports Uniform at lunch time ONLY if they are catching a bus to Co-curricular sports training straight after school (otherwise they change after period 6). This is for any afternoon where there is Co-curricular training, not just Wednesdays. 4. Correct Sports Uniform is to be worn during all training sessions (Rowing and Aerobics included). 5. School Uniform (not PE/Sports Uniform) is to be worn to Chapel and Head's Assembly. Therefore, the only students who should be in PE/Sports Uniform during the school day (Periods 1-6) are those who: - Are in a normal PE practical lesson at that time - Have changed at lunchtime ready to catch the bus to their after-school training session - Have a uniform dispensation from their House Coordinator (e.g. for an injury) Please note: The School s interpretation regarding uniform requirements will be final.
