The University of Kansas 1 Applied English Center Applied English Center Applied English Center courses provide English language instruction to non-native speakers of English. All students whose native language is not English, including international students and residents or citizens of the United States, are required by the Faculty Senate Rules and Regulations (http://www.policy.ku.edu) to enroll in the English language courses, if any, specified for them by the AEC before enrolling in any academic work. Admission to KU does not constitute a waiver of the University of Kansas English proficiency requirement. Students may be required to take the English Proficiency Exam and may be required to take courses with the Applied English Center. labeled 140 and above and AECT 101 are available for credit toward an undergraduate degree. To receive a grade of Credit, students must receive a grade of A, B, or C in the course. Transcripts show No Credit for these courses in which students receive a grade of D or F. A maximum of 9 hours of credit may count toward undergraduate degrees in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the School of Business. A maximum of 6 hours of credit may count toward undergraduate degrees in the School of Architecture, Design and Planning. Consult an advisor in the College or school for details. AAPL 140. English for Academic Purposes: Listening and Speaking. 3 An advanced skills course providing practice in pronunciation, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary development, with an emphasis on college-level content. Students listen to interviews and lectures, and participate in class discussions in order to improve skills in comprehension, note-taking, content discussion, interview, summarization, and presentation in an advanced academic setting. Recorded and written work and analysis are also required. Prerequisite: Placement in this course by the KU Academic Accelerator Program. AEC 1. Support Course:. 2 Hours. Classroom Communication for International Teaching Assistants. 3-4 Practice of communication skills: pronunciation, fluency and vocabulary development, question and answer techniques, paraphrasing and discussion; video-recorded practice teaching mini-lectures or demonstrations with feedback by instructor in tutorial sessions and by other native speakers during presentations. Open only to graduate students or seniors near graduation. Four credits in the fall and spring semesters; three credits in the summer term. Advanced English for Academic Purposes 5. 6-7 A content-based combined skills course offering advanced instruction in university-level written and spoken materials. Students are required to write response papers, essays, and a research paper, as well as take essay tests and make oral presentations. Additional objectives of this course include developing notetaking skills in lectures and completing a portfolio for assessment at midterm and semester end. Seven credits in

Grammar for Communication for Academic Purposes 3. An upper-intermediate level communicative course designed to help students increase conventional sentence- and discourse-level grammar and vocabulary to advance their ability to express meaning appropriately and accurately in spoken and written English. At this level, students continue to learn and practice increasingly complex sentence structures and vocabulary in a wide variety of in-class and out-of-class activities, including group projects. Five credits in the fall and spring semesters; three credits in the summer term. Prerequisite: Placement in this course by the AECG 140. Grammar for Communication for Academic Purposes 4. A low-advanced level communicative course designed to help students better understand sentence- and discourse-level grammar and vocabulary to support their ability to express meaning appropriately and accurately in spoken and written English. At this level, students master increasingly complex sentence structures and vocabulary through practice in a wide variety of in-class and out-of-class activities. Five credits in the fall Placement in this course by the AECG 151. Special Studies in Grammar for Communication 5-1. 3-4 An individualized course combining in-class and on-line work designed to help upper-advanced level students better review sentence- and discourse-level grammar and vocabulary to support their ability to identify, analyze and correct errors in writing. In this course, students write weekly essays in the AEC computer lab and receive feedback and individualized grammar assignments via e-mail. Students also have several face-toface conferences with their instructor and must use review skills to write a passing essay within a designated time limit. Special Studies in Grammar for Communication 5-2. 2 An individualized course combining in-class and on-line work designed to help high-advanced level students better review sentence- and discourselevel grammar and vocabulary to support their ability to identify, analyze and correct errors in writing. At this level, emphasis is placed on writing complex sentences and paragraphs to strengthen fluency and vocabulary. Additional competencies developed in this course include writing essays and integrating ideas from several sources into academic writing. Students build the conventional sentenceand AECR 30. Reading, Writing and Grammar for Academic Purposes 3. 3-8 A high-intermediate level course designed to teach and promote strategies for improving students' academic reading and writing. At this level, emphasis is placed on deepening vocabulary and refining academic skills, including note-taking, paraphrasing, summarizing, revising, and integrating ideas from several sources, to elevate fluency and comprehension. Additional objectives covered in this course include building critical reading and writing skills as well as learning the process of writing a research paper. Students build the conventional sentenceand AECR 140. Reading, Writing and Grammar for Academic Purposes 4. 3-8 A low-advanced level course designed to teach and promote strategies for improving students' academic reading and writing. Special Enrollment in English as a Second Language For- Credit Tutorial:. 1-16 Individualized schedule of instruction in one or more language skills at appropriate level(s) for students enrolling in level 4 or 5 AEC courses. EAP 101. English for Academic Purposes. 6 A general introduction to academic English for students in term one of the KU Academic Accelerator Program (KUAAP) that utilizes materials from textbooks appropriate for use in courses in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. The focus is on the use of English and academic strategies necessary to access, understand, recreate, and critically discuss disciplinary content typical of lower division academic courses. Students read textbook chapters, take practice tests, write papers, and give oral presentations on topics from various disciplines. Prerequisite: Placement in this course is by the KU Academic Accelerator Program. EAP 102. English for Academic Purposes. 3 An advanced academic English preparatory course that helps students in term two of the KU Academic Accelerator Program (KUAAP) expand their ability to use English to access, understand, re-create, and critically discuss disciplinary content for lower division academic classes taken in term two. An advanced academic English course that helps students acquire the ability to use the English language in conducting and disseminating sound academic research. Students will learn how to make a professional PowerPoint presentation, create a defendable thesis statement, evaluate sources, utilize digital databases, cite information, and understand how to avoid plagiarism. The course emphasizes the process of researching a topic related to concepts taught in AAP 101. Students acquire the ability to use relevant technology to conduct their research in order to be autonomous in the future. Students will write a large-scale research paper including multiple source citations and create a presentation. Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in AAP 101. EAP 121. English Grammar for Academic Purposes. 2 A two-hour, high-intermediate grammar course, designed to introduce key vocabulary and major grammatical structures used in EVRN 170 (students must be concurrently enrolled in this course). The grammar course is created in collaboration with faculty who teach EVRN 170. Students are introduced to a range of vocabulary and grammar structures typically used to define, explain, and illustrate key concepts central to this course. The focus is on paragraph organization, grammatical accuracy, word choice, and general comprehensibility. EAP 122. English Grammar for Academic Purposes. 1 Hour U. A one-hour advanced grammar course that focuses on the lexical and grammatical expression of key concepts in EVRN 171 (students must be concurrently enrolled in this course). The grammar course is created in collaboration with faculty who teach EVRN 171. The students explore the vocabulary, phrases, and grammatical options necessary for accurate and direct responses to prompts and short-answer questions. The prompts and short-answer questions come from the instructor of the disciplinary course identified. There is an intense focus on overall comprehensibility, lexical choice, and grammatical accuracy as demonstrated in weekly writing assignments and/or audio recordings. Prerequisite: AAP 121.
