It is a time to ask questions regarding auditions for both our classes and productions as well as our BFA Program in Music Theatre and the BA in Drama in which you can achieve Honors In Music Theatre. MUSIC THEATRE INFORMATION MEETING SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2013 @ 4:30 P.M. LOCATION: WSH 180 ( SMITH HALL ) MUSIC THEATRE WORKSHOP LEVEL I (DRAMA 65) M/W: 3:00 3:50 or 4:00 4:50 p.m. in CAC 3002 ( Studio Y ) MT 1 is a beginning course taught by teaching assistants under the supervision of Dr. Myrona DeLaney & Dennis Castellano Designed for the beginning singer/actor, though all levels of proficiency may audition. (See audition details in the box below.) Work will concentrate on diction, sound production, breathing, characterization and singing solo in front of an audience. Maximum class size: 14. If you have already been accepted to MT 1 in quarters past and received a B- or better, you do not have to audition again, but you must notify Mr. Castellano if you wish to repeat the course by Friday, September 20, 2013, in order to reserve a spot. You can take Drama 65 a maximum of two times. (Offered Fall and Winter quarters.)

2 MUSIC THEATRE WORKSHOP LEVEL II (DRAMA 142) M/W: 10:00 11:50 a.m. in WSH 180 ( Smith Hall ) plus one lab per week (T: 1:00 1:50, 2:00 2:50, 3:00 3:50 or 4:00 4:50 p.m.) MT 2 is an intermediate level course taught by Mr. Castellano and Dr. DeLaney. Freshman and New Transfers with musical theatre or other singing experience are encouraged to audition for this class. MT 2 focuses on acting a song, developing audition material, holding your vocal part in group numbers and repertoire building from different time periods. Students are encouraged to repeat this course (up to four times) in order to build strong audition skills and repertoire. If you have already been accepted to MT 2 in quarters past and received a B- or better, you do not have to audition again, but you must notify Mr. Castellano if you wish to repeat the course by Friday, September 20, 2013. Maximum class size: 40. Since this course is repeatable, there are usually around 15 openings per quarter. (Offered Fall, Winter and Spring quarters.) Auditions for both MT 1 and 2 are on, Wednesday, September 25, 2013, between 8:30 and 11:30 a.m. in PTSU 1110 ( Studio 5 ). Audition requirement: one 32-bar chorus of a ballad or uptempo song. You choose the song that shows you best. Broadway repertoire only. Sign up for a time on the rosters posted on the Drama Callboard. Rosters will be posted on September 9, but don t worry; everyone will be seen if you can t sign up until you arrive in Irvine at the beginning of Welcome Week. MUSIC THEATRE WORKSHOP LEVEL III (DRAMA 143B) T/Th: 10:00 11:50 a.m. in WSH 180 ( Smith Hall ) MT 3 is an advanced level course taught by Dr. DeLaney and Mr. Castellano. This course concentrates on preparing scenes and songs from musical theatre repertoire and is designed to be taken over three quarters: 143A focuses on repertoire written before 1943; 143B on material from 1943 1969; and 143C from 1970 to present day. You may be accepted into the class at any time during the three-quarter sequence. Due to the demand for this class, you may enroll in each section only once. Once you are accepted to MT 3, you do not have to audition again to complete the course cycle as long as you receive a B- or better in the previous quarter. Maximum class size: 20. Enrollment in MT 3 requires concurrent enrollment in Drama 145 (private voice lessons). MT 3 is made up of both B.F.A./Music Theatre students and B.A./Drama students who excel in musical theatre skills. Pre-requisite: Drama 142. Students that enter UCI as freshmen cannot audition for Drama 143 until their second year of residency. (Offered Fall and Winter quarters.) Audition: Tuesday, September 24, 2013, between 12:00 and 2:30 p.m. in PTSU 1110 ( Studio 5 ). Sign up for a time on the rosters posted on the Drama Callboard. Audition requirement: one ballad from Broadway repertoire. Note: If you are a transfer student and have completed one quarter of MT 2 and want to audition for the BFA, do not attend this audition. Simply go to the BFA audition which will also count as your audition for MT 3.

3 MUSIC THEATRE WORKSHOP LEVEL IV (DRAMA 144) F: 9:00 a.m. 12:50 p.m. in WSH 180 ( Smith Hall ) MT IV is an advanced performance class concentrating on role building taught by Dr. DeLaney and Mr. Castellano. Work culminates with in-class performances of abbreviated musicals. Level IV is for students in the B.F.A./Music Theatre and M.F.A. Acting programs only. (Offered Fall, and Spring quarters.) Graduate students may audition by attending the B.F.A. audition (see details below) and must sing a ballad from Broadway repertoire. Graduate students will be excused after they sing and will not be included in the monologue and dance portions of the B.F.A. audition. MUSIC THEATRE MOVEMENT (DRAMA 182A) & MUSIC THEATRE DANCE (DRAMA 183A) DRAMA 182A: T/Th: 1:00 2:50 p.m. in STU4 201 ( Dance Loft ) DRAMA 183A: T/Th: 3:00 4:50 p.m. in STU4 201 ( Dance Loft ) Instructor: Andrew Palermo Both the Music Theatre Movement and Music Theatre Dance courses will explore the many diverse dance styles found on the American musical theatre stage. Drama 183 is designed for the more advanced dancer while 182 is for the mover. Both classes will work on dance sequences and production numbers based on the styles of the great musical theatre choreographers, as well as focus on technique and contemporary movement. There is one combined, placement audition for both courses at which time the instructor will determine which track is best for you. New this year: In an effort to improve the dance and movement technique of our students, the Music Theatre Movement and Dance courses are being reorganized into a sequential, twoquarter curriculum that will take place during the Fall and Winter quarters. The course numbers are in the process of being changed from 182A,B,C and 183A,B,C to 182A-B, and 183A-B. The A section of both classes will be taught in the Fall and the B section in the Winter. 182 & 183 are now designed as a 20-week experience over two quarters. This placement audition will occur during Welcome Week at the beginning of each school year, and as it is now designed as a 20-week curriculum, there will not be an additional audition for Winter quarter admission. It is expected that you will enroll in the full, two-quarter course. The pre-requisite for the course is still one quarter of either MT 1 or MT 2, however, new students and returning students that have yet to fulfill the pre-requisite, may still audition as long as they attend the audition for MT 1 or 2 as well. Therefore, in order to gain admission into Drama 182 and 183, new students will be evaluated as both mover/dancers and singers, and if accepted, will be required to take MT 1 (Drama 65) or MT 2 (Drama 142) concurrently with Drama 182 or 183. New transfers who wish to audition for the BFA in Music Theatre must audition for the class now. Audition: Sunday, September 22, 2013, starting at 5:30 p.m. in PTSU 1110 ( Studio 5 ). There is no sign-up sheet. Everyone arrives at 5:30. (See first page for appropriate shoes and clothing.)

4 BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS IN MUSIC THEATRE Who can audition for the BFA? Students who have completed one quarter of MT 3 (Drama 143); or Transfer students who have completed one quarter of MT 2 (Drama 142). New transfer students who wish to pursue the BFA must also attend this audition even though the MT 2 pre-requisite has not yet been completed. The music theatre faculty would like to start to get to know the new transfers as soon as possible even though the earliest they can expect to be admitted into the BFA is in the Winter quarter.
