Savonia University of Applied Sciences comprises eight schools which are located in the region of North Savo. One of them is located in Varkaus. 3 APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS Student exchanges are always based on agreements between institutions e.g. Erasmus or a bilateral agreement. If you are interested in studying as an exchange student at Savonia UAS at the School of Business and Administration or Engineering and Technology in Varkaus, please contact your home institution's International Coordinator first to find out more about student exchanges. Student exchange is always either a full academic year or one semester. 11 PRACTICAL INFORMATION VARKAUS Varkaus is surrounded by lakes and waterways and it has about 23,400 inhabitants. Although the town seems to be dominated by factories, people can enjoy beautiful nature everywhere. Agriculture and forestry employ 0.4 %, industry and construction industry 43.1 %, services 54.7 % and others 3 %. Industrial development started in the 1800s. A power plant, a paper mill and a pulp factory were built at the beginning of the 1900s. In the last few decades the structure of industries has diversified. There are modern metal, electronics, and leather industries in the town. It can be truly said that in many branches of industry the local know how meets the highest international standards. The greatest employers are the City of Varkaus, Stora Enso Oy (wood processing), Foster Wheeler Energia Oy (power plants), Regional Hospital, Andritz Oy, Warkaus Works Oy, Sahala Works Oy, AFT (Advanced Fiber Technologies). HOW TO GET TO VARKAUS The distance between Helsinki and Varkaus is 320 km. The easiest way to get to Varkaus is to take a plane from Helsinki to Varkaus. It takes only 45 minutes. 12 BEFORE ARRIVING TO VARKAUS When a student plans to study in Varkaus, more information can be obtained from the Student Service Office of the school. Also, the Finnish Embassy in student s country can be contacted. If a student comes from outside the EU, the Finnish Embassy can be contacted to find out information about residence permits and visas or other licenses. If a student intends to bring his/her own car, the driving license must also be valid in Finland. Before leaving, the period of validity of the passport must be checked. Euros will also be needed. All insurances that a student might need during his/her stay in Finland must be arranged. There are no special regulations concerning vaccinations, but vaccination against tetanus is always recommended. AFTER ARRIVING IN VARKAUS Exchange students should inform the Incoming Student Exchange Coordinator (Tuula.Linnas@savonia.fi) of their exact arrival date and time - and which flight, train or bus they will use. After a student has arrived in Varkaus, he/she must register him/herself with the school where he/she is going to study. The hostel and the police station must be informed of any change of residence. The Student Service Office can assist on these matters. ACCOMMODATION Savonia UAS does not have its own facilities for student accommodation. However, students staying in Varkaus may apply for accommodation in the hall of residence near the school. The hall of residence is a private property. You can apply to near campus dormitory by sending an email to reservations@dormitoryvarkaus.fi. Students may alternatively apply for an accommodation in the other student housing units of the town of Varkaus. Application forms are available at Housing Office of Varkaus. A typical apartment includes rooms for 2-3 students (one student/room) with a shared kitchen and bathroom. The apartment buildings have laundry facilities and sauna. The rent for the furnished apartment is about 220/month and a one-month deposit must be paid. You should contact the housing companies directly as soon as you get confirmation from Savonia UAS. The Mobility Office will send the information about accommodation possibilities and the contact addresses together with the confirmation of exchange acceptance.
