HAZARDS ON THE HOMEFRONT Adaptations and Alternative Activities for English Language Learners Safer Alternatives Adaptations and alternative classroom activities for English Language Learners (ELL) are provided here for Lesson 5 from Hazards on the Homefront: A Teacher s Guide to Household Hazardous Waste for grades 6-12. The referenced ELL slides provide images intended to clarify or amplify the meaning of terms and situations, and correspond to the original slides in the guide. If you do not have a copy of the guide, you can download it at www.ecy.wa.gov/ hazardsonthehomefront/guide.html. This lesson provides a visual alternative to the first step in Investigation 5A Safer Consumer Choices. Depending on the reading ability of your students, this activity can be followed by playing Toxic-Free Bingo. 1. Show students safer alternative products. First hold up the hazardous product, then show the safer alternative students could choose to use instead. 2. Show students ELL slides 5.1A-5.1E, images of where products are used around the home and ask them to use product labels to determine what products would be hazardous to use and what products are safest for the cleaning job described on each slide. Answers could include Clogged drains: Lye Drain Opener (danger), Liquid Plumber (danger), Baking soda and vinegar with boiling water (safer), plumber s snake (safer), plunger (safer) Laundry: Clorox bleach (danger), K2R Spotlifter (danger), Oxiclean (caution), Spray and Wash spot remover (caution), club soda (safer) Wood surfaces: Pine Sol (warning), Murphy s Oil soap (safer), vinegar (safer) All-purpose: ammonia (caution or danger depending on concentration), Lysol disinfectant spray (caution), vinegar (safer) Materials Empty hazardous product containers and corresponding safer alternatives or Product Photographs PDF images ELL slides 5.1A-5.1E Optional: Green cleaning recipe cards in English, Cambodian, Chinese, Spanish, or Vietnamese.
