1 Finding Safer Alternatives to Hazardous Household Products Introduction Safer alternatives to hazardous products may do a similar job with less harm to human and environmental health. Grade level 4-12 Related subject areas Environmental Science Health Objective Students play a Bingo game to learn safer alternatives to hazardous household products. Time minutes Equipment needed None Materials Class set of Toxic-Free Bingo sheets Class set of Toxic-Free Bingo Keys Toxic-Free Bingo Key cut into strips Class set of markers (i.e. dried beans) for Bingo game Preparation There are fifteen different Toxic-Free Bingo sheets. Print out two copies of each sheet. That should give you enough copies for a class set. Find enough small objects, such as dried beans, to use as markers. Print out one copy of the Toxic-Free Bingo Key for each student. Make an extra copy of the Key and cut it into strips to use as calling cards to pull for Bingo. Example Aerosol spray Directions Pump spray bottle 1. Give each student a Toxic-Free Bingo sheet and a Toxic-Free Bingo Key. 2. Give each student a sufficient number of beans or other markers. 3. Teacher pulls a calling card strip and reads aloud the left side (the potentially hazardous product). In this example, the teacher reads aloud Aerosol spray. 4. Students use their Key to find the safer alternative to the hazardous product that was called. In this example, it would be Pump spray bottle. 5. Students look for the safer alternative (in this case a pump spray bottle), on their Bingo sheets; if they find it they put a marker on that spot. To increase learning, have a student say aloud the correct safer alternative for each call. 6. Note that several of the potentially hazardous products have multiple safer choices.
2 For example: If the teacher calls Drain opener with lye, students who have a box marked Boiling water may put a marker on it. Students who have a boxed marked Plumber s snake may put a marker on it. Students with both boxes may put a marker on each box. 7. Students get a Bingo with four in a row vertically, horizontally or diagonally. Let the winner be the caller for the next round. Alternative formats available.
