Deprivation Deprivation The 2004 Index of Deprivation was originally constructed so that comparisons could be made between Super Output Areas (geographical boundaries encompassing on average 1,500 people) across the whole of England. The data from this index has been modelled by the CR&I team so that it corresponds to the rest of the figures in this document for the major centre and its 3, 5 and 10 mile catchment areas. The results from the index show how deprivation is distributed at a small area level across England. The overall measure is made up of seven different categories, or domains these can be seen in the table on the next page. (Please note that the overall figure is not a straight forward addition of the seven domains). Each domain gives a direct comparison with the rest of the county and shows how many people living within the major centre catchment area fall within the top, 10- and 20-3 of the nationally deprived total. For more detail on the Index of Deprivation a comprehensive report for the whole of can be found at www.durham.gov.uk/stats. 18
