Scholars Program Scholars Program -1 A comprehensive, year-long residential research enrichment program for medical, dental, and veterinary students NIH Intramural Research Program in Bethesda, MD A mentored basic, clinical, or translational research project in an area that matches students personal interests and career goals Scholars Program -2 Blends elements of two former, highly successful programs the NIH CRTP and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute-NIH Research Scholars Program Co-sponsored by the NIH and private partners via contributions to the Foundation for the NIH Will ultimately have ~70 students Scholars Program -3 The 2012-2013 class consists of 45 students (40 medical, 4 dental, 1 veterinary) from 34 different schools Scholars engage in a mentored basic, translational, or clinical research project in an area that matches their personal interests and career/research goals Student scholars have well-articulated career development plans and dedicated advisors and research mentors 1
Program Curriculum Presentations highlighting the continuum of discovery 2012-2013 MRSP Fellows Training in clinical protocol development and the conduct of human subjects research Focused clinical teaching rounds with patients participating in research protocols at the NIH Clinical Center Leadership Training MRSP Scholars: IC Distribution Program: Eligibility Criteria -1 Designed for students who have completed their initial clinical rotations does not exclude students with strong research interests from applying prior to taking any or after completing all of their clinical rotations 2
Program: Eligibility Criteria -2 U.S. citizens or permanent residents Good standing in medical, dental, or veterinary school Approval from Dean of Student Affairs to participate Program: Eligibility Criteria -3 Candidates in M.D./Ph.D. programs are eligible to apply Prior research experience is desirable but not required 4 th year applicants who are selected must make arrangements with their school to defer graduation Program: Benefits 12-month stipend (currently $33,700) Relocation expenses to and from Bethesda Residential housing Domestic conference travel expenses Health insurance Tuition support for scientific courses and textbooks Program: Housing-1 Studio, one or two-bedroom furnished apartments on/near campus; available at comparable market rates Participants cover their housing expenses through their stipend Utilities (water, gas, or electric) included 3
Program: Housing-2 MRSP scholars are required to live in the assigned residential/campus housing for the entire 12-month period Program: Housing -3 Final housing assignments are based on indicated preferences and a lottery system No pets allowed Program: Housing -4 Program: Application Process Applicants apply on-line and the application consists of: Cover letter/personal statement Curriculum Vitae 5015 Battery Lane adjacent to the NIH Campus Building 60 on the NIH Campus Three letters of recommendation Transcript from medical/dental/veterinary school and undergraduate institution 4
