Firesteel 60WB and 120WB PRODUCT DATA SHEET NO: 410 The Ultimate Water Based Coatings for Structural Steel Protection 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes fire resistance Extremely competitive loadings Water borne Fast drying times under typical site conditions No top seal for dry internal applications Single coat application for the majority of steel sizes (based upon up to 60 minutes protection) Certifire approvals CF5047, CF5048

Firesteel 60WB and 120WB What is Firesteel 60WB and 120WB? Firetherm Firesteel 60WB and 120WB are water borne emulsion based thin-film intumescent coatings to provide 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes fire protection to internal structural steelwork. DESCRIPTION Firesteel 60WB and 120WB are water borne intumescent coatings applied by brush, roller or spray to provide fire protection to structural steels as required by Building Regulations Approved Document B. Firesteel WB coatings are solvent free with no noticeable odour. Firesteel 60WB: For use in internal applications to provide 30 or 60 minutes fire protection. Firesteel 120WB: For use in internal applications to provide 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes fire protection. Firesteel WB coatings dry exceptionally quickly and this, combined with a capability to tolerate high build coating without it sagging, makes it particularly suitable for fast track construction. HOW IT WORKS Firesteel WB coatings are intumescent, which in the presence of heat expand several times their original volume to form an insulating char. The expanded coating forms a thick durable layer that insulates structural steel from the heat of even the most severe fire and its associated turbulent air currents. All products have been independently fire resistance tested by Warrington Fire meeting performance criteria as per BS5950 Part 8:2003 and tested in accordance with the requirements of BS476 Pt. 21.1987 Fire resistance to structural steel. LOADINGS & QUANTITY Like all fire protection to structural steel, the thickness of product applied (the loading) varies depending upon the period of fire resistance required and the A/V value of the steel member involved. The A/V value can be quickly obtained from the steel manufacturers data sheets or contact Firetherm Technical department for assistance and loadings. TOP SEALS Briefly, the A/V value of a steel member is an expression of its ability to absorb heat. The larger its surface area as a ratio of its mass, the quicker heat will be absorbed and the greater the A/V factor. Firesteel 60WB and 120WB does not require over-coating, however where a finish colour has been specified Firetherm can supply a suitable top seal available in a wide range of BS4800 or RAL colours PRIMER COMPATIBILITY Firesteel 60WB and 120WB are applied to clean, dry, primed steels. Extensive primer compatibility tests have been undertaken on single and two pack products commercially available. Bituminous and chlorinated rubber primers are unsuitable because of their poor performance in fire conditions. Zinc rich primers require a tie coat before application of Firesteel WB. Please contact Firetherm Technical Department for compatibility of applied primer with Firesteel or advise for specific applications such as galvanised surfaces, stainless steel etc. CONTRACT SUPPORT All Firetherm Products are supported on site by Engineers who are experienced in the areas of Fire Engineering, paint application and post application inspection. Please contact Firetherm Technical Department for further information. Page - 2 -

Firesteel 60WB and 120WB Application Instructions 1 Before commencing work Please read Firesteel WB Health & Safety notes. 2 Application Conditions Firesteel WB are water-borne products but despite this, they have a high tolerance of site conditions. They are fast to dry even in low air movement conditions. Air movement will speed up the drying times. Coated surfaces must be protected from exposure to water. Ensure that the minimum temperature at the time of application is at least 5⁰C on a rising thermometer with an RH of 80% or lower. Steel temperature should be at least 3⁰C above dew point. Check the steel by touch to see if there is any condensation or water on it. If there is - stop and wait for the steel to warm up. 3 Steel Preparation All steel should be blast cleaned to SA2 1/2 in accordance with BS7079 Part A1 and primed with a suitable primer. A very wide range of commonly used single pack and two pack primers have been tested under Firesteel WB. Contact Firetherm's Technical Department (01322 551010) if unsure. Bituminous and chlorinated rubber primers are unsuitable because of their poor performance in fire conditions. Zinc rich primers will need a tie coat before application. Check the over-coating times on epoxy primers by referring to the steel fabricators. If primer is found to be over-cured, under-cured or cured at temperature extremes beyond manufactures specification, contact manufacturer for advice. When incorrectly cured, epoxy primers have excess gloss patches, light abrasion is required in order to improve mechanical/chemical adhesion of the intumescent. 4 Application Firesteel WB may be applied by brush, roller or spray. Do not dilute. Mechanically stir before use, this will slightly loosen the product. When applied by brush, the finish will have pronounced brush marks which would be acceptable if the area were at high level, or unlikely to be seen. Rolling will leave an even texture which may be more acceptable and spraying will leave a smooth even finish which is highly decorative. Firesteel WB has been developed to provide an excellent finish with a minimum of operator input. Maximum wet application per coat: By brush 0.5mm (500 microns) using a laying on technique. By spray 1.2mm (1200 microns). 5 Spray Specification Firetherm recommends an airless spray system such as a Graco King 56:1 pressure ratio. However, other systems may be suitable such as airless electrical or petrol powered machines for example a Graco Ultra 1595, Graco GM5900 or Graco GM 7900. The following are general recommendations for spray equipment and may vary dependent on site conditions: Hose Diameter 10 mm (3/8") Max Hose length Fan angle Tip Size 6 Monitoring Wet Film Thickness Firetherm provides a wet film gauge to monitor paint thickness during application. Press the teeth of the gauge into the wet paint, holding the gauge at right angles to the surface. The last wet tooth denotes the wet film thickness in microns. Keep the gauge clean and do not let paint dry on it. 7 Measuring Dry Film Thickness Ensure the paint surface to be measured is hard dry. Check by trying to make an impression in the paint film. Use a magnetic gauge such as an Elcometer electronic instrument. Subtract primer film thickness from reading and top seal if used. Firetherm can provide this service if required for a nominal charge. 8 Drying Time In still air conditions the following drying times can be achieved with an RH of 50% by spray application. 600 Microns Wet Film 1200 Microns Wet Film Please note the above are for guidance only, other factors will have effects. Air movement will considerably improve the above performance. 9 Top Seal 60m 20-40 degrees 19-25 thou Operating pressure 2500-3000 psi.
