Kristiansund at the ocean s edge Kristiansund, one of Norway s most distinctive towns, oozes charm and bustle. Colourful houses surround the cozy harbour. The town is known as the capital of the klipfish industry and it has a population of around 23,000. For centuries, klipfish was the most important export item from Kristiansund. Cod was salted and dried on the smooth rocks along the coast and then consumed as a great delicacy in southern climes. Visit the Norwegian Klipfish Museum and learn about the exciting history of klipfish and also sample this delicacy. Kristiansund is a shopping town with shopping centres, department stores, and exciting, small, unique shops. It also holds its own as a culture town. The opera in Kristiansund is famous and puts on more than 100 performances each year, including a big outdoor opera production in the late summer. The International Nordic Light Festival of Photography and a number of other large and small festivals are also held in the town. Grip is a small island with a big history and a popular tourist attraction. The island is situated 14 km out to sea north of Kristiansund and all the buildings in the small fishing village are intact and well maintained. The picturesque island also has a stave church, a café and a photo exhibition of life on Grip. Did you know that Kristiansund is connected to the Atlantic Road by a tunnel. We have two stave churches, a fishing village situated 14 km out to sea, a klipfish museum and a petroleum centre, and activities such as deep sea fishing, kayaking, diving and walking. Everything can be found in or close to the town. The Sundbåten boat, which has been in service since 1876, is perfect for guided sightseeing trips in and around the town s harbour. The Atlantic Road is an absolute must and only a half-hour s drive from Kristiansund through the Atlantic Tunnel. The Atlantic Road is a unique section of road that takes you right out to the ocean s edge. The road was voted Norway s Engineering Feat of the Century and the British newspaper The Guardian called it the world s best road trip. Innerdalen valley, Norway s most beautiful mountain valley, only one and a half hour from Kristiansund, is the perfect place for a peaceful walk in unspoiled scenery. Other attractions well worth a visit on the island Averøy include Kvernes stave church, Kvernes Rural Museum and the beautiful old fishing village on the island of Håholmen. Kristiansund harbour The seaport of Kristiansund is in a beautiful setting on four islands at the ocean s edge. The islands form a natural harbour, surrounded by the town and sheltered from the elements, that is both unique and beautiful. The harbour is not far from the shipping fairway and it is a spectacular port of call for cruise ships. A big, new shopping centre is situated by the cruise ship quay in the middle of town. Enjoy a pleasant, easy walk through the charming streets and visit small shops, restaurants serving local produce or some of the many attractions that Kristiansund has to offer. The majestic mountain range Trollheimen, is known for having Europe s cleanest air and water. Kristiansund is Norway s opera town and has a rich cultural scene. Welcome to the region Kristiansund & Nordmøre! 3
