Maps and Globes - Study Guide Name: LESSON 1 Vocabulary 1. map - a picture that shows the location of places 2. map title - tells what the map is about 3. globe - a small round model of Earth 4. continent - one of seven large land areas 5. ocean - one of the large areas of salt water on Earth 6. Equator - an (imaginary) line around the middle of a map or globe that is halfway between the North Pole and the South Pole Study Guide: 1. A flat drawing that shows places on Earth is called a _map_. 2. A globe is a round model of the Earth. 3. The Equator is a line drawn on a map or globe halfway between the North Pole and the South Pole. 4. North is the direction when moving toward the North Pole. 5. South is the direction when moving toward the South Pole. 6. When you face north, east is to your right and west is to your left. 7. We do not use up and down as directions when reading a map. 8. The largest areas of land are called continents. 9. The largest areas of water are called oceans.
