2016 Packaging Design Awards

Background Look around you. Packaging is everywhere! From the cleaning products we use to the cereal we choose, everything has been carefully packaged to get it safely from the factory to the shop shelves. Without even thinking about it, we have all been influenced to buy something because of the design of the packaging. The success of a product is largely down to the three main functions of packaging: preserve, protect and promote. The aim of the Schools Starpack Packaging Design Awards is to help students understand the work that goes into the packaging surrounding the products they consume and teach them about the vital role packaging plays in the consumer market. Entering the competition will also provide an insight into a career in consumer packaging design and encourage them to learn more about what is a creative and rewarding career choice. The awardbriefs are provided by industry experts from manufacturers to household brands and provide excellent opportunities for Years 10, 11 and AS level. Entry is for an individual student s work. The Schools Starpack awards form part of an annual awards programme, which also includes the Student Starpack Packaging Design Awards for colleges and universities and the Starpack Industry Awards. Prizes Following rigorous judging, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Commended framed certificates are awarded. For each brief there are sponsor prizes of up to 500 for award winning schools and up to 100 for individual students. The sponsors have the right not to award a prize if they do not think the work put forward has reached the required standard. Important Dates Register online at: www.starpack.uk.com/schools on or before 4 March 2016 Physical entries to arrive for judging the week commencing 14 March 2016 Judging 22 March 2016

Helpful Guidelines for Teachers All entries must supply a 3D model and no more than 6 single sided A3 sheets or boards that demonstrate in a simple, clear, and precise way, the research, the development stages and the final outcome. After completion of the online form teachers will receive an automated email providing details of delivery arrangements and entry numbers. If you do not know which student names to select at the time of registering online, then type in Student A, Student B etc. The online registration form allows you to add the names up until 11 March, but it is most important to register before 4 March. The entry number needs to be placed clearly on the back of each work sheet and firmly, but more discreetly, on the finished model. If a brief is done as a class project, then the teacher must select the BEST six designs for submission. What the Judges are Looking For A 3D model to withstand transport and handling. The quality of manufacture of the model and graphics used. Six one-sided A3 sheets or boards to demonstrate the development of ideas. Originality and aesthetic qualities of the design rather than the commercial viability. How the pack delivers benefits to consumers and that the functionality has been considered as much as the branding. The quality of the supporting portfolio which must include evidence of research and the development of the concept. Ë Ë Designs which demonstrate awareness of environmental issues, through economic use of the material and recyclability.

A Gift pack for your pet Sponsored by Year 11 and AS Level The Prize GPI will award 500 to the school which has provided the best overall carton board entries. The Packaging Society will also award 50 for the best supporting portfolio. Introduction We love our pets; they re part of our family life and we ll do anything to treat them, especially at Christmas time, on their birthdays or as a reward for being well behaved. The Brief Create a display carton that would show off some really imaginative pet gifts. For the carton to work really well, consider the following: Does it attract a sale by showcasing the products, with an interesting decorative design? The carton could be printed inside and out, and have windows. How are the products held in place with fitments? Could the packaging be used as a toy for the pet, or used to teach a trick, or educate the owner on pet care? Materials to Use The brief requires a carton-board carton, not corrugated board or plastic like a pouch or bag, but could use other materials like plastics for windows or fitments or string to hang it. Free carton board material can be obtained by contacting Nikki Clark. Sponsor Background Graphic Packaging International is one of the Europe s leading packaging suppliers, designing and producing unique packaging products and solutions for the food and beverage industries across the UK and Europe. www.graphicpkgeurope.com helpline For guidance with the brief contact Nikki Clark: e nikki.clark@graphicpkg.com For general enquiries contact Rachel Brooks: e rachel.brooks@iom3.org

B Introduction Milk provides a balance of nutrients, builds strong bones; calcium contributes to muscle and blood health. To encourage children to drink more of it, we would like you to design a pack that contains flavoured milk drinks for children. The Brief The challenge is to create a small 250ml bottle, pouch or other suitable container that can be used for supplying flavoured milk products. Flavoured Milk stay strong and healthy Sponsored by Points to Consider While it has to be appealing to children it is Mum who will buy it, if it has the right nutritional and health messaging Give thought to how you can get the healthy messages across It has to be premium, should be eye catching, with great shelf stand out against competitors It could be a combi- or multi-pack of different flavours An environmental credential could help sales is it recyclable or reuseable? Think about the product in use Materials to use The container would be plastic but any material / model is acceptable for the mock ups. Sponsor Background Logoplaste are leaders in plastic packaging, providing an overall service for packaging R&D, in-house production and quality systems, backed by technical support and advice. www.logoplaste.com www.logoplasteinnovationlab.com helpline For guidance with the brief contact Chris Clarke: e chris.clarke@logoplaste.com For general enquiries contact Rachel Brooks: e rachel.brooks@iom3.org Year 10 and 11 The Prize An all-expenses paid visit to a Logoplaste manufacturing site for up to 30 students This exciting opportunity is for a tour of the Leeds Super Dairy Hole in the Wall plant supplying milk bottles for Arla foods. Students will get to walk through the entire manufacturing process from incoming raw materials, finishing with filled milk bottles In addition, there will be 100 for the winning individual and 400 for the winning school. The Packaging Society will also award 50 for the best supporting portfolio.

C Multifunctional receptacle for collecting waste Sponsored by Year 10, 11 and AS Level The Prize BPI will award 500 to the school which has provided the best entries. The sponsor may award 100 of the 500 to an individual student should an outstanding entry be presented. The Packaging Society will also award 50 for the best supporting portfolio. Introduction To meet EU recycling targets, the UK is increasing its targets for the recovery of waste packaging and that packaging is a valuable resource that we re throwing away! More than 40% of all waste packaging is still sent to landfill and to avoid, or reduce, that we need some innovative thinking. The Brief Design an innovative and multifunctional receptacle for collecting this packaging waste, together with an awareness logo or symbol. This receptacle can be placed at strategic locations where recycling facilities are not normally available. The design of the logo or symbol will be an integral part of this brief, raising awareness of the need to increase recycling rates. The collection receptacle itself should be manufactured from recycled materials. Points to Consider Eye catching structural design and graphics to encourage young people to recycle Has to be placed in different locations (parks/streets/public places/ schools) Will it be weatherproof? How would different packaging materials be separated in the receptacle? Materials to Use Recycled materials. Sponsor Background BPI British Polythene Industries plc is the largest manufacturer and recycler of waste plastic film in Europe. BPI supplies over 400,000 tonnes of film annually to the key agricultural, food production, retail and manufacturing sectors worldwide. www.bpipoly.com helpline For guidance with the brief contact Nina Virdi: e ninavirdi@bpipoly.com t 01773 841848 For general enquiries contact Rachel Brooks: e rachel.brooks@iom3.org

D Introduction The summer Olympics 2016 will be hosted in Rio one of the most vibrant cities in the world hosting the most exciting sporting event with a multitude of different cultural influences being brought together. This event will generate a host of new products and promotions, most of which will require new packaging. The Brief Create a unique snack that evokes and brings together the cultures and the spirit, and the excitement of the event. You must appeal to all ages, all countries and all sexes. It should be packaging for a snack/food on the go, either A snack that could be consumed at the event - and this could be a really different proposal based on a regional food. It is up to you to decide on a product and how it will be packaged, or A solution for a product brought from a supermarket and consumed in the comfort of the armchair, for viewing the games at home. Consider the style of food from the perspective of a British viewer. What would make this a winning idea is something really different from, or an improvement to, what is on the shelves at the moment both in respect of the packaging and the product. Materials to Use The mock-up can be made from any materials, but explain what material is to be used, on your boards.
