Expressions and Equations Expressing Operations in Algebraic Form Common Core: Engage New York 6.EE.1, 6.EE.2, 6.EE.3 and 6.EE.4 Lessons 15-17: 6.EE.2b
Lesson 17: Write Expressions in Which Letters Stand for Numbers 6.EE. A.2b
What does 6.EE.A.2 cover? Write, read, and evaluate expressions in which letters stand for numbers a. Write expressions that record operations with numbers and with letters standing for numbers. For example, express the calculation Subtract y from 5 as 5 y. b. Identify parts of an expression using mathematical terms (sum, term, product, factor, quotient, coefficient); view one or more parts of an expression as a single entity. For example, describe the expression 2(8+7) as a product of two factors; view (8+7) as both a single entity and a sum of two terms. c. Evaluate expressions at specific values of their variables. Include expressions that arise from formulas used in real-world problems. Perform arithmetic operations, including those involving whole-number exponents, in the conventional order when there are no parentheses to specify a particular order (Order of Operations). For example, use the formulas V=s3 and A=6s2 to find the volume and surface area of a cube with sides of length s=1/2.

MARZANO SCALE RATING Before we start the Learning Target Lesson, think about the Learning Target for today. How much prior knowledge do you have regarding that goal? Chart your prior knowledge using your pre-target score icon.
Today, I work towards achieving the Learning Goal by focusing on the Learning Target for this lesson. I will write algebraic expressions that record all operations with numbers and letters standing for the numbers. Take a moment to ANALYZE today s Learning Target, using Marzano s scale (0-4) evaluate and rate your prior knowledge, understanding and application.
Focus 8 Algebraic Expression Learning Goal I am able to work with numerical expressions and use letters to represent unknowns in problem solving situations I am able to investigate and apply properties of operation in numerical contexts, such as the associative, distributive, and commutative properties. I can build on my understanding of inverse operations to solve algebraic expressions.
Mathematical Words & Operations
Lesson 17: Write Expressions in Which Letters Stand for Numbers STATION ROTATIONS DIRECTIONS Working in groups of two or three complete each station on your handout. At each station, write down the problem and the expression with variables and numbers. You are encouraged to underline key words in each problem.
Lesson 17: Write Expressions in Which Letters Stand for Numbers STATION ONE 1. The sum of a and b. 2. Five more than twice a number c. 3. Martha bought d number of apples and then ate 6 of them.
Lesson 17: Write Expressions in Which Letters Stand for Numbers STATION TWO 1. 14 decrease by p. 2. The total of d and f, divided by 8. 3. Rashod scored 6 less than 3 times as many baskets as Mike, Mike scores b baskets.
Lesson 17: Write Expressions in Which Letters Stand for Numbers STATION THREE 1. The quotient of c and 6. 2. Triple the sum of x and 17. 3. Gabrielle has b buttons but then lost 6. Gabrielle took the remaining buttons and split them equally among her 5 friends.
Lesson 17: Write Expressions in Which Letters Stand for Numbers STATION FOUR 1. d doubled. 2. Three more than 4 times a number x. 3. Mali has c pieces of candy. She doubles the amount of candy she has then gives away 15 pieces.
Lesson 17: Write Expressions in Which Letters Stand for Numbers STATION FIVE 1. f cubed. 2. The quantity of 4 increased by a, and then the sum is divided by 9. 3. Tai earned 4 points fewer than doubled Oden s points. Oden earned p points.
Lesson 17: Write Expressions in Which Letters Stand for Numbers STATION SIX 1. The difference between d and 8. 2. 6 less than the sum of d and 9. 3. Adalyn has x pants and s shirts. She combined them and sold half of them. How many items did Adalyn sell?
Lesson 16 Closing Discuss student answers, answer any questions and provide an opportunity to discuss common mistakes. Is it possible to have more than one correct answer? Why or why not?
Today, I worked towards achieving the Learning Goal by mastering the Learning Target for this lesson. I CAN write algebraic expressions that record all operations with numbers and letters standing for the numbers. Take a moment to REFLECT on today s Learning Target, using Marzano s scale (0-4) evaluate and rate how you built upon your prior knowledge, demonstrated understanding and application.
