Victories over poverty Programming Highlights: In 2008 (FY08) CARE supported more than 1,100 poverty-fighting projects in 70 countries to reach more than 55 million people. Here are some highlights of our work in 2008 to empower women and families around the world: 67 B 66 67 Our programmes helped almost 7 million people prevent the spread of HIV/ AIDS and reduce the negative socio-economic consequences of the epidemic. 58 61 57 65 CARE and our partners reached more than 35 million people with information and services to protect their health, plan their families and raise healthy children. 43 68 64 69 63 30 62 60 38 34 5 CARE s education programmes helped 9 million students gain the skills they need to succeed, and removed barriers to school attendance especially for girls. Our emergency preparedness and response projects reached more than 11 million people, with special emphasis on the needs of the most vulnerable: children, women and the elderly.
