design your dream kids room

design your kid s room it s as easy as 1, 2, 3 Similar to your own room, a great child s bedroom provides a happy, cozy and nurturing retreat. It s a place where your child will spend precious hours playing, learning, sleeping and dreaming. At Pottery Barn Kids, we want to help you take your child s bedroom design from concept to completion. Follow the three easy steps in this booklet and create a bedroom your child will love. STEP 1 MEASURE YOUR SPACE Plot the bedroom dimensions on the adjacent room grid. You will need a pencil and a metal tape measure to complete this step. WALL-TO-WALL MEASUREMENTS Measure your room from wall to wall. Use your measurements to draw the room s perimeter on the grid. Note that each square on the grid represents one foot (1 ) or twelve inches (12 ). DOORS, CLOSETS & BUILT-INS Measure doors, closets and built-ins from the outside trim. Note whether doors open in or out. Mark on the grid. WINDOWS Note window heights, as well as window distance from the floor, as you might want to put cabinets and window seats below. Also measure and note the window height and width inside the window trim, as you might want to hang a window shade behind your draperies. CEILING HEIGHT Measure the main ceiling height. Measure and note any archways or anything else impeding the space such as a soffit. ELECTRICAL & HEATING VENTS Mark all electrical outlets with an X, all switches with an S and all heating vents with an H.

STEP 2 DEVELOP YOUR DESIGN DIRECTION Now it s time to get creative and craft the heart of your bedroom design. Involve your child in the planning process. The design should be a reflection of his or her personality. GIVE THE ROOM SHAPE WITH FURNITURE Start with a cozy and comfortable bed that inspires hours of relaxation, dreams and contented sleep. Although your child is probably still small enough to fit in a twin bed, consider a full or queen bed that is ideal for reading stories together now and keeping ahead of growth spurts in the future. Make the bed the focal point of the room. Then, add other essential pieces including a nightstand, dresser and desk. Finally, determine whether you have room for additional pieces like a bookshelf, armoire, toy chest or activity table. ADD SOME COLOR Ask your child about his or her favorite colors and activities. Have them help pick out sheets and a comforter that tie into these favorites. Be sure to let him feel the fabric; touch is one of children s most acute senses and they love feeling different textures. Next, select three hues from the bedding a light, medium and darker tone and use these as the foundation for your color palette for the rest of the room. PLAY WITH DETAILS Small details give the bedroom its unique personality. Choose a few fun pieces of wall art that tie back to the theme of the room. Add a thick rug to provide a soft surface for play. Try some novelty pegs on the wall to hang pajama sets, robes or jackets. Look for fun buckets, baskets or shelving to provide storage in an aesthetically pleasing way. MAKE ROOM FOR BROTHERS AND SISTERS Will your child be sharing the bedroom with a sibling? If so, plan this into your design and consider space-saving furniture including a bunk bed or trundle. Each child can still display their individual personality in the room with color and bedding choices. Many of our Pottery Barn Kids furniture and bedding selections coordinate well with one another.

STEP 3 CREATE YOUR FLOOR PLAN Now that you have your room dimensions plotted on the grid and a design direction, use the furniture templates available at the Pottery Barn Kids Design Studio to create your floor plan below. See the ideas on the back for inspiration. Each grid square represents one foot (1 ) or twelve inches (12 ) in your room.

tips for a great kids bedroom design GET INSPIRED What are your child s favorite colors, interests and activities? The best way to find inspiration for your room design is by considering those things your child loves. Whether the theme you choose is very elaborate or something as simple as polka dots, it should originate from something that makes your child smile. GIVE IT FORM Use furniture pieces including the bed, dresser and desk to create the building blocks of the room. Be mindful of overcrowding the space, and be sure not to block doors, windows or natural walkways. MAKE IT FUNCTIONAL Design a bedroom that is as functional as it is beautiful by adding elements that create an organized and serene environment for your child. Add furniture pieces and accessories that provide extra storage you can never have too much. Pick an overall theme and aesthetic that will continue to work as your child grows. Use a lamp to create soft lighting for bedtime stories. ADD A PERSONAL TOUCH Details like a colorful corkboard filled with your child s favorite pictures, a fun piece of artwork that ties back to the theme or the room, a cozy reading nook near the window or a shelving unit filled with antique toys makes a bedroom feel special and unique. THINK AHEAD Kids grow quickly. Design a room that will last by selecting furniture pieces that allow room for this growth and decor choices that your child will still enjoy a year or two down the road. KEEP SAFETY THE TOP PRIORITY All Pottery Barn Kids furniture, bedding and accessories meet or exceed U.S. and Canadian safety regulations. Remember to anchor any tall or heavy units to the walls; tip-resistance kits are included with all Pottery Barn Kids tall furniture pieces for extra safety.
