Dear Team Aviano Parents, We realize there are many factors that can be intimidating when enrolling your child in Asilo therefore we have created this Asilo Handbook for Parents of School Age Children to help you along the process. This handbook should be used as a tool to help you understand the Italian school system and provide you with the most essential information needed to assist you with enrolling your child in the Italian schools. We have established an outstanding cooperative relationship with the local Italian schools throughout the Aviano community and we encourage you to explore the educational options that exist for you. You will not be disappointed. As a parent, you will become immersed into the Italian community, get to know other parents and make new friends while your child enjoys top notch education. You will find that your child will receive a solid education and the permanent advantage of being bilingual. While you and your child(ren) may find the first couple months difficult, by the end of the school year your child will be completely integrated academically as well as socially. The topics covered in this book are listed on the Table of Contents. If you are unable to find the answer to your question, please call DSN 632-5407, commercial 0434-30-5407 and one of our Cultural Adaptation Team members will be more than happy to provide follow-on assistance. While it is not mandatory for a child to attend pre-school most parents enroll their children in a scuola maternal to prepare their student with the necessary language skills needed for kindergarten.
PRE-SCHOOL INFORMATION (continued) Pre-school in Italy is free with the exception of private schools. Scuola per l'infanzia or Asilo can be found in almost every community around Aviano and are normally operated by the local parish (private) or state school (public). Since the program is optional, slots are not guaranteed for all children. In addition, vacancies can be extremely competitive, so it is best to begin the process as soon as you decide Asilo is the best choice for you and your child. Registration for all schools occur January through February however each school may be different therefore you are encouraged to contact the school of interest for their specific enrollment period. The school year begins September and runs until July. It operates Monday through Friday, whereby you can choose a full day (0800-1630) or half day (0800-1130/1330 with lunch) curriculum. If it is past the deadline to sign up, you may complete the process and the child s name will be added to the waiting list. Note: As the parent you may be responsible for signing an agreement that you agree to the terms set forth by the school for pre-school enrollment. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Special Needs Education Since the 1970s, Italy has instituted an inclusive education policy which states that children with disabilities are to be educated in mainstream settings at all educational levels (primary, secondary, etc.). Therefore, additional support is provided to the schools in the form of specialneeds teachers and reduced class size. Absences Parents are responsible for informing the school in the case of an absence or other particular situations concerning their child. After more than 5 days of absence due to illness, the school requires a doctor s excuse (certificato medico). Furthermore, the school may also request documentation for prolonged absences, to include but are not limited to: child temporarily returns to the country of origin or if he or she moves temporarily, (TDY) or permanently to another location (PCS) Tuition Rates Tuition rates vary depending on the type of school you have chosen. If you chose a private school, you will need to check with the school for the tuition rate and/or fees. Public schools, on the other hand are free of charge but you are required to pay for a lunch ticket each day (approximately 4.00-5.00). The child is required to have the meal ticket with him/her daily upon arrival at school with his/her name and date written on it.

La Preside/ Il Preside (The Principle) The principle is responsible for the general coordination of the school and its personnel. Should any issues or concerns arise you can approach the principle for assistance. La maestro/il maestro (The teacher) In Italian classrooms there are various teachers around to teach multiple subjects and assist where needed. One of them is regarded as Family Coordinator and is there to assist you. In classes there can also be a teacher with the specific task of educational support for disabled students (insegnante di sostegno).
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION (continued) Collaboratori scolastici (Janitor/Custodians/Building Manager) The Janitor/Custodians/Building Manager is responsible for: opening and closing the school managing the reception desk helping parents managing students outside the classrooms answering the phone keeping the school clean and tidy Segretaria/o (The school secretary) The secretaries deal with the school s administration process. In particular, they are responsible for enrollment of new students and requests for additional services to include scholastic documentation needed by students. Additionally, the school secretary may or may not speak English, so it s best if you can take an Italian co-worker or friend who speaks Italian to help you. Catholic Religion Lessons It is customary for all schools to include a class on Catholic Religion for one hour per week. Included in your enrollment packet, is a form that you can submit that identify whether you wish for your child to attend these lessons or not. As an alternative to religion class, you can choose other educational activities such as; individual study, alone or with the assistance of a teacher or, if the school schedule permits, you can choose to allow your child to enter or leave the school later or earlier. If you choose one of these alternatives you must complete a request form titled Modulo per l esercizio del diritto di scegliere se avvalersi o non avvalersi dell insegnamento della religione cattolica. (Found at the back of this booklet). Recommendations Children should wear comfortable clothing, large enough to allow maximum freedom of movement. For active days it is suggested to dress your kids in overalls and short sleeve shirts. When arriving and leaving school, gradually coach your child(ren) with their morning and afternoon routine. For example, in the morning assist your child(ren) with taking his/her shoes off and putting on the appropriate school footwear and hanging up their jacket in the proper place. In the afternoon, the routine may include placing his/her bib and towels in the proper place after use.
