Elementary Spanish Curriculum: 2013 2014 In addition to hearing the spoken language, and becoming comfortable responding in Spanish, these lessons are presented to lower elementary and upper elementary students. The level of instruction and type of follow-up will vary in complexity within the cycles. Accommodations are made for students who are native speakers to engage in more advanced reading and conversation related to the Spanish language. Children are then introduced to the vocabulary of fantastical creatures in Spanish thorough vocabulary cards. Then children break up into smaller groups to create a few sentences (using Montessori Spanish Cards) to begin building a story. Beginning: A story starter (a few simple sentences that are related), beginning students should be able to work with Montessori Spanish sentence cards at this point. If they still have difficulty reading an adult will help them put their ideas to use with the materials. Intermediate/Advanced: A fleshed out simple story with a beginning ending and an end all written in present tense. Children will have the option of creating a skit or play. Sports Goals for this week: For the children to gain understanding of Sports vocabulary in Spanish and communicate what sports they like to play and how they play them using verbs. Vocabulary: Sport names, equipment names, review of movement verbs, gustar, and days of the week. Lesson: Children read a book about Sports in Spanish, then are introduced to Sports vocabulary, then they play a round of Sports vocabulary bingo. Children go outside and act out the new Sports movement vocabulary and are led in a discussion of their favorite sports that they participate in or want to participate in. Vocabulary: Song, music, instruments Lesson: Play children music from three different Spanish speaking countries, ask the children which instruments do they hear, what country do they think the song is from, and what the song is trying to express. With basic percussion instruments have children play along with the music. In the second week, children will learn Spanish songs with movements. Lesson: Children will read a book about Latin American Artists, and will look at picture cards and observe the different types of art.
