Green Islands Field Energy Monitoring (GIFEM) Progress Report, May 2010 1

Overall strategy of the GIFEM project GIFEM Monitoring Network General Information Platform 100 Monitored households 20 Monitored households with micro-generation equipment Feedback Family Recruiting Program (green familly) Green Islands R&D Projects Social Impact Socio-Economic impact Studies Simulation Models PhD Programs Regulatory Framework 2

The main goals for GIFEM project To monitor of energy consumption: characterize the energy consumption, through its continuous monitoring. To provide the households under study with information regarding their energy consumption profile in order to promote efficient behaviors moving towards the smart houses reality. To share our monitoring network with other projects studying compatible topics. To evaluate the performance of micro-generation equipments in Azorean households: the equipments: photovoltaic, wind energy generators and solar water heating; the outcome: to provide information to energy market to evaluate the economical strengths of micro-generation energy in the Azores. 3

Team Coordinators Armando Mendes (CEEApIA-UAç, Coordinator) Ruben Luís (CIVISA, CVARG-UAç) Jerónimo Nunes (CMATI, UAç) Hélia Guerra (CMATI, UAç) Luís Mendes Gomes (CMATI, UAç) José Cascalho (LabMAg, FCUL) Carlos Silva (SES-IST, UTL) Matthias Funk (DM, UAç) João Albergaria (Go4theGlobe) 4

Tasks and Scheduling first fase is finnished equipment selection 5

T5 Monitoring Devices Assembly and Optimization 6 Ruben S. Luís (Ruben.S.Luis@azores.gov.pt) João Albergaria (Go4theGlobe) Product-specifications: Dimensions: 81,3 x 72 x 43,5 mm Voltage: 100-240 V~ Frequency: 50 / 60 Hz Max. capacity: 3680 Watt Max. power: 16 A Plug: CEE 7/7 (E&F Hybride) Counter plug: CEE 7/4 Schuko (F) ZigBee-MESH: 2,4 GHz

T2 - Green Family Program To design and maintain a dynamic website to promote and publish all public activities of the Green Family Program; To promote the Green Family Program using also the local social media (TV, Radio, Newspapers, etc.) through ARENA; To design, implement and maintain a Web database to store and publish all relevant information about the enrolled households in the Green Family Program. Actual Results: Green family web site; Candidates for participation; Survey for selection criteria definition. Luís Mendes Gomes (lmg@uac.pt), Hélia Guerra; Armando Mendes External collaborations: Carolina, Ricardo, Carlos. 8

www.greenfamily.uac.pt 9

Candidates for participation 144 valid records; Mainly S. Miguel and Terceira; Almost a symmetrical distribution of ages, with mode between 25 and 44 years old; Mostly management, specialists, technicians and administrative professions 10

Survey for selection criteria definition Public interest in the renewable and energy efficiency theme. Total of 191 records, 188 valid; articles in newspapers Opportunistic sample. Good geographical distribution, similar to island population. Wide range of houses and locations. Wide range of domestic appliances. 40% spend monthly 30-49 in electricity. Green behavior. Analyses not finished. 11

What next? Due to lack of company support the project is now in stand by mode. Pilot in some houses (as much as our own resources allow). Support to other projects: GenAre, net zero schools, net zero farms,... 12
