Khan Academy Summer Math Review www.khanacademy.org Summer Math Review Guidelines: Khan Academy summer work is required for students entering any upper school honors level math class and is optional for all other Prep students. However, we strongly recommend that every student spend time over the summer reviewing the key topics listed for his or her upcoming math class. It will help ensure a solid start to the school year and reinforce key math skills. This is especially important for students who are new to Prep. However, if you find a section super easy, and can answer five questions in a row correctly without using hints or guessing, move on to topics that are more challenging. Students: If you do not have a Khan Academy account, sign up using your Google, Facebook or E-mail account. When choosing a screen name please use your real full name. Do not create quirky screen names or else your teachers won t recognize you online. REMEMBER TO SIGN IN TO YOUR ACCOUNT BEFORE STARTING ANY KHAN WORK. IF YOU DON T SIGN IN, YOUR PROGRESS IS NOT RECORDED AND YOU WILL NOT GET CREDIT FOR COMPLETING THE ASSIGNMENT! Once classes start, you can designate your math teacher as a coach in Khan Academy, and he or she will be able to see every problem you tried, how well you mastered each topic, how long you spent on each problem, which videos you watched, and what your areas of strength or weakness are. Topics with a star are the practice exercises and topics with a play button are optional videos that you may choose to watch, especially if you are having trouble with a section. The videos are often very helpful and are a great resource if you get stuck or haven t learned a particular topic. Parents and Legal Guardians Students under the age of 13 will need a parent or legal guardian to help them with the sign-up process and authorize their use of Khan Academy. Have your child begin the sign-up process. The program will require your e-mail address as legal guardian. Instructions will then be sent to your e-mail account on how to complete the registration process, and your child will be blocked from using Khan until the account is validated. Parents may also create their own Khan account and then have their child select them as a coach, allowing parents to track and monitor their child s progress just like a teacher. For more information on this, create your own Khan account, then in the search box, type How to Add a Coach. A short video will walk you through the process. Your son or daughter must then add you as a coach from within his or her account. Also look at Coach Resources to see the different ways that you can use Khan to track your child s progress. If you have questions or problems please contact Doug Lynam (dlynam@sfprep.org).
