Healthy Kids Colorado Survey A Unified Effort for Student Surveys
New Unified Effort Based on guidance from the Governor s office, a new Healthy Kids Colorado Survey (HKCS) Steering Committee was formed. The Steering Committee is comprised of two representatives from: Colorado Department of Human Services Colorado Department of Education Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment
Needs to address Develop one agreed upon survey that meets multiple needs for middle and high school Provide better quality data and more specific to local areas Create a system that will be sustained over time
What s Different Now? In 2012, the HKCS Steering Committee blended funding to select one vendor, the University of Colorado Denver, to serve those selected in the random sample. The key differences from previous administrations will be: Collection of both state and regional data The state funded sample will increase from about 80 schools and 2500 students to nearly 300 schools and 30,000 students. All state agencies will use the HKCS instrument (with a multi modular approach) Input from an Advisory Committee
HKCS Advisory Committee The HKCS Advisory Committee is a multi disciplinary group, including school district staff, local public health and other experts. Purpose of the Advisory Committee 1. Provide input into the new HKCS methodology. 2. Advise the Steering Committee related to how to inform the school health and public health field regarding the 2013 administration of the survey.
Need Additional Data? The state funded effort will attempt to obtain state and regional data (based on the 21 Health Statistics Regions) on a biennial basis. If schools, districts, local public health or community partners would like to survey on an annual basis, increase the sample size, or conduct a census, there will be an option to pay for this service and to coordinate with the state and regional sample.
