As Spanish Ro- man Catholic monks and nuns established missions among the Native Americans, they built their own furnishings. Because of limited time, resources, and abilities, their work was rug- ged and simple, but sturdy, and strictly functional. Many years later, during the Arts and Crafts Movement of the 1920 s, Mission style furniture was popularized by German American furniture artisan and bungalow designer, Gustav Stickley, who built and sold Mission style furniture in America. Today, Mission style furniture has come full circle, as in vogue among contemporary interior decorators. Constructed from sturdy, dark-stained oak hardwood, its straight lines speak of simplicity, functional durability, and style. This refined, yet simple, all-american style is a wonderful blend of Spanish, Native American, and American cultures. We autograph each finished piece of furniture with our stamp of quality. The Craftsman Collection What is Quarter Sawn? Quarter sawn wood can be recognized by its unique figurative ray flake grain. To create quarter sawn wood, the log is first quartered and then cut perpendicular to the growth rings. This results in a very straight fine grained surface with interesting ray flakes. Quarter sawn furniture was quite common years ago when craftsmen were primarily concerned about quality and durability. We offer you the same beauty, durability, and distinction today. 23
