2 Welcome to erea College... where, since 1855, education has taken place in both the classroom and the workplace, where today s students work 10 to 20 hours per week in lieu of paying tuition. Over 80% of the student body comes from Kentucky and the ppalachian counties of eight southern states students with much promise but with limited financial resources. erea College is a four year liberal arts college committed to academic excellence and internationally recognized for quality education, human service, and the unique labor program. Fine furniture has been the hallmark of the erea College Woodcraft operation for many years. Our furniture is made from solid, selected hardwoods, handshaped and fitted. We use the very best ppalachian black walnut and wild cherry. From the selection of wood to the final handrubbed finish, our students and full-time craftspeople work on a single piece of furniture. The furniture grade black walnut we use is a very rich deep dark brown when first worked and over a long period of time will soften with age. Our wild cherry, when first worked is very light in color, but soon ages to the familiar deep red. dull gloss lacquer with two or more undercoats of sanding sealer is used to achieve the deep smooth appearance which is our trademark. We want the natural grain of the wood to be very visible and not covered with an overly heavy coating of lacquer. We can provide other finishes, such as an oil finish, which reveals more of the wood s natural appearance.
