Achieving the Vision Quiz

The World Methodist Council is a global fellowship representing over 8o million Methodists worldwide. By supporting local churches in their work of Christian education, human rights and social justice, the Council fosters ecumenical and inter-religious relationships and connects Methodists across the world. Through developing resources and training leaders for evangelism the Council helps to strengthen the international Methodist movement. By promoting publishing of Christian literature, supporting youth and ministerial exchange programmes, developing scholarship and by strengthening family life, the World Methodist Council continues its 140 year history of bringing together Methodists from 152 countries. I look on all the world as my parish; thus far I mean, that, in whatever part of it I am, I judge it meet, right, and my bounden duty, to declare unto all that are willing to hear, the glad tidings of salvation The vision of the World Methodist Council is to see its work fully resourced for many, many years to come. As we think and pray for the work undertaken by the Council we also ask that everyone who is able contributes 50p a year for the next five years to support the Council s work in mission, evangelism, youth work and inter-religious dialogue. By taking part in this quiz and making a small contribution to the Achieving the Vision endowment fund, you will be joining millions of other Methodist people around the globe in ensuring the glad tidings of salvation continue to be spread throughout the world. Whether it is playing trivial pursuit with the family at Christmas, or watching Mastermind or being part of a pub quiz team, lots of us love quizzes. Here you can find everything you need to run your own Achieving the Vision Quiz. There are questions for everyone whether you are mad about history, fanatical about music, lit up by literature, fascinated by the world church this quiz is for you. There are six rounds with five questions in each category. Time to wake up those grey cells! Also available to download are a template for a local press release, a poster to advertise your quiz event and a powerpoint showing more about the work of the World Methodist Council and the Acheiving the Vision endowment fund. www.methodist.org.uk/prayer-and-worship/methodist-special-sundays/aldersgate-sunday

Planning in advance i. Decide how large you want your event to be. You could hold it for your church community and ask for teams from different groups in the church. Or you might like to make it a circuit-wide event with teams from different churches. ii. Choose a date and time that fits in with your church calendar and is as accessible to as wide a variety of people as possible. Remember to check the date with the leaders of your church and make sure the room you want to use is available. iii. Decide how much to charge for each team to enter. iv. Decide how large each team should be somewhere between five and eight people works well. It is a good idea for teams to have a mixture of ages and experience. v. Take bookings for each team and ask them to identify a team leader and a team name. Ensure they pay in advance. vi. Appoint a question master. vii. Prepare prizes for the winning team these could be as simple as a gold medal or perhaps a chocolate orange to symbolize the world. viii. Decide what, if any, refreshments are to be offered during the event and arrange these. ix. Decide how answers will be marked if you let each team mark their answers after every round, then you can have a main score board and the leading team is clearly identifiable. You will need someone to keep track of this during the event. x. Decide how much time the whole event will take. A possible timetable could be: Welcome and explanations Rounds 1-3 followed by refreshments Rounds 4-6 followed by answers and prizes xi. This quiz is not very long which allows you to expand it as you wish. How about adding a game of Pictionary in the middle of the evening where each team races each other to guess 10 words drawn by a team member. The first team scores 5, the second 4, the third 3 and so on. Advertising i. Feel free to use the template design as a basis for your own poster for the event and send this round your circuit and local community. It is worth asking if local shops will display a poster for you. Taking posters into shops in person is a great way of raising awareness in your local community about the world-wide Methodist church and the vision of the World Methodist Council. ii. Ask if you can speak in a service at your church about the event and why you are holding it. There is more information about the World Methodist Council and the Achieving the Vision project on the Methodist Church website. If your congregation say they have never heard of the World Methodist Council then please tell them that they are ideal candidates to take part in the Achieving the Vision Quiz. Inspire your church with stories of the Methodist Church around the world give them a glimpse of a real situation. iii. Use the template press release to create your own statement for the press. Then send it to your local newspapers and radio stations. Send it round your circuit and other churches to be included in their notices. You might also want to send it to the Methodist Recorder and other denominational newspapers as a news item. Why not also tell your local tourist office about the event. They are usually happy to include events in what s on listings. iv. Make sure you remember to report the event afterwards. This can be through another press release and the church notices. Make sure your church knows how close they are to the target of 50p per member of the community roll, and invite donations if there is a shortfall. Very soon after the end of the event your church or group should know if they have Achieved the Vision. So all the plans are in place...... enjoy yourselves and help raise much needed funds for the World Methodist Council
